Jamie Carragher has emphasised the summer transfer error Liverpool made that has led to their inconsistent start to the season.
Liverpool have been struggling to find their identity so far this season. They have been picking up some good wins in the Champions League recently, against Rangers and Ajax.
But in the Premier League, they have not looked like the side that finished as runners up to Manchester City last season.
Indeed, although they are the only side to have beaten the reigning champions so far, it was not long before they came back down to earth by losing to struggling Premier League newcomers Nottingham Forest.
A number of their players have been under pressure. In turn, it has led to questions being raised of their transfer policy.
Specifically, there have been growing concerns about the state of their midfield. During the summer, they were considering some world-class options there.
Aurelien Tchouameni was on their radar, for example, but went to Real Madrid from Monaco instead. Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund superstar Jude Bellingham remained off limits.
Liverpool did bring in youthful attacking midfielder Fabio Carvalho from Fulham, who looks raw but promising. Their main midfield addition in the end, though, was Arthur Melo.
Joining on loan with an option to buy from Juventus, the former Barcelona player is still yet to make his Premier League debut. Although, he has featured once in the Champions League.
Injuries have been to blame and Arthur will not make it back before the World Cup. Even so, many have wondered whether Liverpool’s recruitment team should have aimed higher than him anyway.
In their most recent Premier League match, the loss to Nottingham Forest, Jurgen Klopp had to rely on Fabinho, Carvalho, Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott across the midfield. Other than Fabinho, it was a youthful department.
Captain Jordan Henderson came off the bench eventually to provide some more experience. However, there might have been more quality there if Liverpool had invested more in the summer.
Carragher claims Liverpool couldn’t just get by in midfield
According to their former player Carragher, the Reds should not have neglected the opportunity to find a high-profile midfielder just because they couldn’t get Tchouameni or Bellingham. In turn, Klopp may have been left light.
”If you actually look at the Liverpool midfield against Nottingham Forest, it wasn’t the best,” Carragher said on CBS Sports Golazo.
“There were young players who if you have young players, you want one of them to play alongside one with experience. You don’t want them to all play together at once.
”It was still a poor performance, a poor result. But I felt Liverpool feel as though they can just get through another season in midfield because they missed out on Jude Bellingham and Tchouameni who went to Real Madrid.
”This season has proved that they should have gone into the market for just what we might call good players because at this moment the midfield is just not functioning, and when you have a problem defensively and going forward, the first place you look at is the midfield.”
Klopp has plenty of options in his squad in midfield. However, not all have been fit enough to be at his disposal. Meanwhile, some of those that have are coming under fire for their performances.
Even someone previously as reliable as Fabinho has been criticised by Carragher recently.
In 2023, Liverpool will have to think more seriously about who can add something to their midfield. Whether they act in January or the summer remains to be seen.
