Jamie Carragher thinks Trent Alexander-Arnold is an “amazing” solution to Liverpool’s midfield issues as he is “too good to not be in the centre”.

Liverpool endured a troublesome season in 2022/23 and they ended up missing out on the Champions League places.

Jurgen Klopp’s side came on strong towards the end of the season but they fell short to Man Utd and Newcastle United in the end.

During the run-in, Alexander-Arnold was executed in a central role when Liverpool were in possession and this switch proved to be a real success. He grabbed eight assists in their final ten league matches.

Klopp is likely to continue with this set-up heading into next season and Carragher thinks Alexander-Arnold has been “completely different” since this tactical change.

“I think his body language when he’s in midfield, compared to when he’s just playing in defence, is completely different,” Carragher told Redmen TV.

“Feels like I’m watching a different player. Some of the passes he plays, no matter who we buy, if we bought Bellingham, how much more could he do that TAA does in midfield?

“When Liverpool are on the ball, whoever you buy, whatever you spend, they can’t do more than Trent. I think another season I’d be of the mind, let’s buy a right-back and put him in midfield, because this kid is too good to not be the centre of this team.

“It is getting to the stage when it’ll become his team, he’ll end up being captain. Take away the stuff he gets criticised for, which at times it is not great. He can improve on stuff, although he’ll never be amazing at it, so let’s focus on what he is amazing at.”

Speaking last month, Alexander-Arnold revealed that Klopp hopes this alteration can help Liverpool to “control the centre” of the pitch.

“The idea around it, as it was explained to me, was about improving our inside play. Controlling the centre. Getting an extra player in that area. He trusted me to be able to do what I needed to do to make it work,” Alexander-Arnold said.

“I was excited. I saw it as an opportunity. It’s a position I’d not played before. I just wanted to go out there and prove that I could do it.

“We couldn’t prep much around it, if I’m being honest. With it being the day before the game, it was only a brief session. For Arsenal specifically, it was a case of trying to learn it as we played it.”
