Jamie Carragher has suggested that Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford could win the PFA Player of the Year award over Erling Haaland.

Haaland has been the red-hot favourite award since the off as he needed no time to adapt to his new surroundings in Manchester.

The 22-year-old has scored 26 league goals in just 23 appearances and he looks set to break all sorts of goalscoring records.

Rashford has also been in fine form recently though and this has already been his greatest-ever goalscoring season with 24 goals in all competitions.

Since the World Cup, no player in Europe’s top leagues has scored more goals than Rashford who continues to deliver each week.

Carragher thinks that the timing of Rasford’s form could sway the PFA award in his favour over that of Haaland.

‘I am not for one second suggesting Rashford is a superior striker and footballer to Haaland,’ Carragher wrote in his Telegraph column.

‘But the PFA Player of the Year vote is all about timing.’

‘Having been in a dressing room when the forms arrived to fill in, I can assure you no-one is thinking about who was the best player in September and October.

‘It is the six weeks before the vote that is most influential, so if Rashford inspires United to victory over Newcastle United in Wembley’s Carabao Cup final what might now be a 50-50 shout will edge in his favour.’

Given that Arsenal are currently leading the way in the Premier League, there is also a strong argument for the likes of Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard.

The hype currently surrounding Rashford cannot be ignored though and he will likely be one of the favourites for the award.

The 25-year-old seemed to pick up a knock in his most recent game against Barcelona and he now faces a race against the clock to be fit for the weekend.

When asked on his injury status, Erik ten Hag provided the following update: “The players are now coming in.

“We have to do investigations, so straight after a game you can’t say. You have to wait for the medical [staff].”

Of the 24 goals that Rashford has scored this season, 14 of them have come in the Premier League.

He seems to have hit form at the perfect point of the season and perhaps Carragher’s shout isn’t too far-fetched when you consider all of the factors.
