Jamie Carragher and Thierry Henry don’t think Christian Pulisic is good enough to be a starter for Chelsea after having “enough opportunities”.
The USA international signed for the Blues from Borussia Dortmund in January 2019 before returning to finish the remainder of the season on loan at the Signal Iduna Park.
Pulisic perhaps had his best spell in a Chelsea shirt in his first season at the club, contributing nine goals and four assists in 25 Premier League outings.
But he has suffered with injuries and a lack of consistency with Frank Lampard and the recently-departed Thomas Tuchel both using him sparingly.
Pulisic has only started one match in all competitions this campaign with the 23-year-old coming off the bench for 15 minutes in their 1-0 loss to Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday night.
With former USA international Clint Dempsey defending Pulisic, Carragher questions whether Pulisic is good enough to be a regular for Chelsea going forward.
Speaking on CBS Sports, former Liverpool defender Carragher said: “Do you think he’s not playing because of Thomas Tuchel or himself?
“I don’t think he’s good enough to play for Chelsea. I think he’s been there for a few years now. I think he’s had enough opportunities.
“I don’t think a new manager is going to completely rejuvenate him or he’s going to play week in, week out now Tuchel’s gone. I just think he’s a squad player for Chelsea no matter who the manager is.
“To play week in, week out and make a difference for one of the best teams in the world, he’s not good enough for that right now.
“I’ve said before, I think he’s got great ability. Some of those things I’ve seen him do for Chelsea, the goals he’s scored. But it’s not consistent enough and he gets injured quite a lot.
“I just don’t ever see him displacing a Mason Mount or a Kai Havertz or players in those positions – Raheem Sterling is there now, [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang. I just don’t see it.”
And Henry agreed with Carragher and told Pulisic that at some point he has to “deliver” for Chelsea if he wants a regular place in the starting XI.
Arsenal legend Henry added: “You have to come and deliver at one point. It’s about you also, what you can bring on the table.
“You can be the best chef in the world and if the guy doesn’t put anything on the table, what are you going to cook?
“It’s always about the coach, it’s always about help him, help that. Can you bring something to the table for me to cook? Can he be about himself? Free yourself, whether you stay or you leave, can you perform? That’s about it.
“It’s one thing to play in transition, remember? Playing in transition, Dortmund, pressing, gegenpressing, or whatever and when a team waits for you, and you have to unlock stuff, it’s a different ballgame.
“Now I don’t think he’s a bad player, I’m just saying at what point can it come from you? At what point can he free himself?”
