Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has hit out at talkSPORT and Danny Murphy over “clickbait” which made him out to be negative over the Reds’ summer “transfer ideas”.

There has been criticism of Liverpool in recent weeks following a slow start to the season in the Premier League which has seen them nine points from a possible 18.

And the critics got louder following a dismal defensive display against Napoli on Wednesday night as Liverpool lost 4-1 to Luciano Spalletti’s side in their first Champions League match of the season.

Liverpool’s worst defeats under Jurgen Klopp and how the Reds responded

Liverpool brought in Darwin Nunez, Fabio Carvalho and Calvin Ramsay during the early part of the transfer window with Juventus midfielder Arthur signing on loan on deadline day.

When asked if agrees with some Liverpool fans who feel FSG let them down in the transfer window, Murphy told talkSPORT: “No, a few people have jumped on this about the transfer policy in the summer. I don’t remember anyone doing any particular articles or talking on our show or any TV station about what they’re lacking in defence and midfield.

“They brought in Konate for £50m to help with Matip, Gomez and Virgil van Dijk, there’s four. They’ve brought in full-backs to cover the two they’ve got. They’ve spent £85m on a striker to try and fill the void left by Mane’s goals and assists that you’re going to miss.

“Where haven’t they backed him? Yeah ideally you give him a load of money to go and get him another one but then that stunts the growth of someone like Harvey Elliott or Fabio Carvalho. It’s finding a balance.

“Harvey Elliott we wouldn’t have seen if they keep buying multi-million, 30 or 50 million pound midfielders. Where do you stop with that? Do you want Liverpool to become Man City? They can’t. They have to try and do it a different way.

“It’s all well and good being wise after the event. I didn’t see too many articles this summer going ‘if Liverpool don’t get a midfielder they’re not going to challenge for the title’. Everyone, including me, said it’s going to be Liverpool and City again, they nearly won the Quadruple.

“Three months ago we were talking about Liverpool nearly having one of the greatest seasons in history.”

Host Jim White then asked: “So is Jamie Carragher being wise after the event do you think, Danny? Liverpool massively got their transfer ideas in the summer wrong.”

Murphy added: “Yeah I think so, I think he’s looking for some excuses or reasons and not looking at the obvious, which is a simple minset change from some of the players who have become complacent, who are thinking they are a bit better than they are and need to get back to some basics.”

But former Liverpool defender Carragher hit back at talkSPORT and Murphy, insisting that he’s never said anything like that.

Carragher wrote on Twitter: “Not once said Liverpool got it massively wrong in the transfer market and I’m not being wise after the event! Everyone knew Liverpool needed/wanted a midfielder, Klopp, club, fans. They tried for Tchouameni and couldn’t get Bellingham right now. Keep up with the clickbait.”
