Sam Allardyce is being linked with a sensational return to the Premier League at Leeds United as Javi Gracia is set to leave the club.

Leeds find themselves in a precarious position, just one place above the relegation zone on goal difference.

Everton’s 2-2 draw with Leicester on Monday night means that Sean Dyche’s side are just one point behind Leeds in 19th place.

With the stakes so high at the bottom of the table, Leeds could roll the managerial dice one more time.

Jamie Carragher understands why Leeds would be looking at a manager like Allardyce, but he is unsure if the fans would get behind the idea.

“It sounds crazy and we never used to think this could happen in our league, but the stakes are so high I think I could probably understand it,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

“I don’t think Sam Allardyce has ever come in this late. He’s normally come in in January, has time to change it.

“Decent appointment. Whether the crowd get behind it, I’m not so sure. In terms of making them more solid and better defensively, there’s probably no one better out there.”

Leeds have the worst defensive record in the league and have conceded 67 goals so far this season.

Allardyce has made a name for himself over the years as the relegation battle escape artist, although he would be coming to Leeds on very short notice.

With just four games remaining this season, he would have to make an instant impact to turn things around.

Their four remaining matches are up against Manchester City, Newcastle, West Ham and Tottenham.

Leeds arguably have the toughest run-in out of all of the clubs who are involved in the relegation scrap.

Under Gracia, they are winless in their last five games and have conceded 18 goals in that time. Scoring goals hasn’t been as much of a problem for Leeds this season.

Of the teams in the bottom half, only Leicester have scored more goals than Leeds this season. Hitting the back of the net 43 times, there is quality in this squad.

Allardyce will be tasked with one of the biggest jobs of his career to keep them up. 

With the relegation battle expected to go down to the wire, it should be a thrilling end to the season.
