Oli Carter hopes his maiden Championship century has put Sussex in position for a welcome win.

The 20-year-old from Eastbourne was 113 not out overnight as his side reached 245-7 away to Glamorgan.

He said: “I’m obviously delighted with my knock.

“I hope it puts us in a good position and hopefully we can crack on and win the game.

“It was all about being patient. We had lost Tom Haines and Tom Alsop early on so it made it more important for me and Tom Clark to build a partnership and progress from there.”

Sussex have not won in the Championship for more than a year.

But Carter warned batting on the Cardiff wicket, scene of their last victory, is not easy.

He added: “It was tricky. It is a bit slow in patches so you just had to really be patient and wait for the bad ball to come and try and rotate from those good balls.”

The Sussex side includes seamer Jack Brooks, signed from Somerset on a two-match loan.
