Real Madrid insist Manchester United are gaining an ‘exemplary player’ after it was confirmed that Casemiro will be moving to Old Trafford.
The Red Devils turned their attention to the 30-year-old after it became clear Frenkie de Jong did not want to join the club. And things have moved quickly as links emerged just a few days ago. It was reported earlier on Friday that United had agreed personal terms with the Brazil enforcer.
Los Blancos have now issued a statement revealing that the midfielder will be leaving. And, having made 336 appearances in all competitions for the LaLiga giants, he departs with their blessing.
A statement on the Real Madrid official website read: “Real Madrid wants to express its gratitude and affection to Casemiro, a player who is already part of the legend of this club.
“Casemiro has been one of the most transcendental players in one of the most important and successful stages of our history.
“In addition to this brilliant track record, Casemiro will always represent for the memories of [fans] the values of our club.
“An exemplary player who has given everything for Real Madrid. Real Madrid is and will always be his home and we wish him and his family good luck in this new stage of his life.”
United will pay an initial £60m which could rise by a further £10m with add-ons. Erik ten Hag will be getting a player used to winning, with Casemiro landing three Spanish titles during his near 10-year Bernabeu stint.
He was also part of five Champions League-winning teams and landed the Copa del Rey in 2013-2014. But he will arrive at a club in a very different position to the one he has left.
Casemiro could be key to United revival
Manchester United currently sit bottom of the Premier League table with defeats in their opening two games. A 2-1 reverse at Brighton was followed by last Saturday’s debacle at Brentford.
The Bees ran out 4-0 winners after capitalising on an error-strewn United display. The north-west giants looked lightweight throughout and Ten Hag has signed a player to address the situation.
Casemiro has been termed a ‘destroyer’ in the middle of the park. And he regularly features near the top of the charts for blocks and tackles made.
But he is also capable of contributing in attack, with an eye for a pass and 31 goals for Real.
The South American is set to became United’s fourth summer signing after Christian Eriksen, Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia.
Others may follow before the window closes, with rumours that the Old Trafford outfit will look to do a number of late deals. But it may be that the capture of Casemiro is the most important of all.
There are some pundits who doubt whether the former Sau Paulo player is the right fit for United. However, Ten Hag wanted a player to add some backbone to his side and finally has his man.
