Cash boost for Bulgarian athletes

The Bulgarian Olympic Committee will hand out enhanced cash bonuses to athletes who win medals at next month's Vancouver Games.

The BOC will offer £89,000 for a gold medal in Vancouver where as 2008 Beijing champions were awarded £62,300 levs.

Bonuses for silver and bronze medals were also increased to £75,500 and £62,500 respectively from £62,500 and £44,500.

"I hope that Bulgaria will have its big moments during the two weeks in Vancouver," BOC chairperson Stefka Kostadinova said.

Despite the cash incentive, the Balkan country's chances of landing a medal in Canada remain remote.

Triple Olympic medallist Evgenia Radanova carries the nation's hopes of a podium finish in short track skating.
