Casper Ruud believes Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune have proved that the general level in tennis has gone up a few notches and “more players can challenge the best in the world”, which has made the sport “more fun”.

Ruud himself has enjoyed a fine season as he finished runner-up at the French Open and the US Open to rise to a career-high of No 2 in the ATP Rankings.

He has also qualified for the season-ending ATP Finals, but he was overshadowed by Alcaraz as the teenager beat the Norwegian in the US Open final and also surged to No 1 in the world, having also won two ATP Masters 1000 titles and two ATP 500 events.

Rune, meanwhile, has dominated the end-of-season indoor swing as he won his maiden ATP Masters title at the Paris Masters while he also collected the Stockholm Open trophy and finished runner-up at the Swiss Indoors and Sofia Open.

His Paris Masters title run was particularly impressive as he beat three-time Grand Slam winner Stan Wawrinka, John Isner, seventh seed Andrey Rublev, Alcaraz (who retired while 6-3, 6-6 behind) and 21-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic.

He finds himself at a career-high of No 10 and Ruud – who defeated the Dane in the quarter-final at Roland Garros this year – is excited about the future of tennis.

“Rune and Carlos are the same age. It’s great to have two of these guys now fighting for the biggest titles and winning them. It’s really impressive,” he said on the Eurosport vodcast Ruud Talk.

“Of course, it’s a little bit of a surprise that he [Rune] did as well as he did. But I feel like almost everyone can beat everyone and that’s a little bit more exciting.

“Just the general level of tennis has maybe raised in all aspects, and more players can challenge the best in the world, which is fun, and you’ll have these little bit more surprising results here and there.

“It’s fun to see that he and Carlos have sort of moved up and shown the world that they’re here and that they were hungry, ready to play.

“He was a little bit fortunate maybe in Paris because against Wawrinka he saved a couple of match points and then he ends up winning the tournament.

“It just shows you how small the margins can be in this world and that’s why we love it. That’s why I love playing and watching many matches.

“He’s top 10 now as well, so that’s a great way to finish the year breaking top 10. We will see more of Holger in the future.”
