Norwegian Casper Ruud beat China’s Zhizhen Zhang in the third round of the men’s singles event at the French Open at Roland Garros on Saturday.
Zhang won the first set on Court Suzanne Lenglen, but Ruud powered back for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-4 win to advance to the fourth round.
“It was very tough, I was frustrated at the beginning because I didn’t start as well as I hoped. He was playing well, hitting many winners and I didn’t find any holes in his game,” said Ruud.
“At 5-4 in the second set, he played some sloppy shots and I got the break to even the match. That gave me the confidence to start playing better and better. The French crowd helped me a lot today.
“I don’t feel so relaxed, even if I might look it. Maybe I’m a good actor, but every match is stressful, and physically and mentally tough.
“This is the first year I’m coming here to defend a big result, having made the final last year. I feel some extra pressure, but if you say that I look calm, then I’ll take it as a compliment.”
Zhang was the first Chinese man to reach the French Open third round since Kho Sin-Khie in 1937.
Ruud will play Chilean Nicolas Jarry in the fourth round.
Meanwhile, Danish star Holger Rune has also advanced to the fourth round after beating Argentina’s Genaro Alberto Olivieri in straight sets.
Rune will meet Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo in the next round after ousting Olivieri 6-4, 6-1, 6-3.
“Super happy with my win today, it was difficult. It was windy, and Olivieri played a good tournament, so I had to be sharp,” said the world No 6.
“I played some of my best tennis. Every chance I get to step out here and perform in front of a beautiful court, I’m going to fight until the end.
“I played a practice match the day before yesterday. I won. It’s nice to keep the rhythm, but it’s different to a proper match. I had to be sharp today, having to play my best. There are things to improve, but I’m happy to be in the fourth round with another great match coming.”
