Cat Zingano Teases ‘Epic' Summer UFC Return Bout, but It Won't Be Miesha Tate

Cat Zingano Could Have Quit Fighting, but Didn't Want to be a Product of Circumstance (Video)

Cat Zingano hasn't set foot inside the Octagon in more than a year. Her last fight was a loss to then-champion Ronda Rousey at UFC 184, in an extremely disappointing 14 seconds. It was the first loss of her career.

Most fighters coming off of a loss went to get right back in the cage to get things back on track. Zingano says her next fight is set, and hinted that it would be sometime around late June or early July, but that's because she had some healing to do over the past year or so.

“I had some pretty big bumps and bruises I needed to take care of, as far as physically,” Zingano said in a recent interview on Inside MMA. “And just on the personal note, I’m doing all of this for me and my son, and that gives me a little more responsibility than any of these people have to deal with. I worked a lot on just the mental aspect of it.”

As far as her return fight, Zingano said that it would be “epic,” but admitted that it wouldn't be against current champ Miesha Tate, a fighter that she has previously defeated.

“Being that I’ve had a year off, they really want me to come back and have a tune-up fight,” Zingano said. “The fight that I want the most, clearly, is Miesha. Seeing her win that fight (against Holly Holm for the belt), and in the fashion she won that fight, definitely put a fire in my spirit.”

But as much as she wants to fight Tate again, and especially for the belt, Zingano can't look past her next opponent.

“I’m not looking past this opponent; this is a very, very valid opponent, and it’s going to be an exciting fight,” Zingano told Inside MMA's Ron Kruck. “I’m super stoked for what you guys get to see. I can’t be the one to break the news. But I’ll just tell you it’s going to be epic.”
