England’s World Cup group stage concluded against Wales on Tuesday, with the Three Lions’s 3-0 victory setting up a last-16 knockout clash against Senegal.

It took a while for Gareth Southgate’s side to make the breakthrough, going in 0-0 at the end of the first half.  However, they came out sharper and more incisive in the second half with two quick-fire goals, which ultimately sent Wales crashing out of the World Cup.

Readers shared their views on how England performed, as well as where it went wrong for Wales, and debated whether the team are of a high enough calibre to win against tougher opponents like Brazil and Argentina, and continue their success in the last 16.

England: 'That game showed us the two sides of England'

Readers were impressed with England’s performance against Wales, particularly in the second half, and argue the Three Lions were clearly the better side. Many praised Gareth Southgate’s changes to the line-up, but warn of the sterner opposition ahead.

Wales: 'I expected Wales to be much more aggressive; like Scotland were at the Euros'

Readers were not so complimentary of Wales. Although some Welsh fans expressed their disappointment at the result, others criticised the side’s fixation on England, their lack of aggression and asserted that having only two strong players - Bale and Ramsey - simply does not cut it.

The verdict on Gareth Southgate: 'One minute Southgate is superb and the next he’s awful'

Readers were divided over Southatgate’s managerial style. Some pointed out the defeats England suffered before he took the reins, and how close the Three Lions came to success with him in charge at the Euros. While others suggested his tactics were lacking and his cautious approach during games would not win England the World Cup.

Looking ahead: 'This won’t be easy'

Ahead of England and Senegal’s meet for the first time on Sunday, readers make it known that the match will be a tough one and discuss how the outcome could go either way.
