Celtic and Rangers given huge Chelsea transfer prediction after controversial statement released
Ally McCoist has reacted to the possibility of Raheem Sterling joining Scottish giants Celtic or Rangers amid uncertainty over his Chelsea future.
Speculation has built over the 29-year-old's future at Stamford Bridge in the wake of Sunday's 2-0 defeat to Manchester City. Sterling was left out of Enzo Maresca's squad against City with representatives of the winger releasing a statement shortly before kick-off for "clarity" about his role at the club.
Football.london understands that Sterling was informed on Friday that he would be left out against City. Chelsea's hierarchy are understood to be fully behind Maresca's decision.
And while on talkSPORT discussing the Chelsea winger's next move, host Jeff Stelling quipped about an unlikely transfer from a listener's message. He said: "Raheem Sterling should sign for Rangers... I'm not going to read the rest of this, but what about Celtic?"
Such a signing would excite the Parkhead crowd, yet former Rangers player and manager McCoist has his bets on Sterling packing his bags for foreign shores if he does leave west London.
He added: "Brendan [Rodgers] knows him, but I think he'd see it as a step-down. I don't think so I think if he's leaving the country, he's going to Saudi Arabia."

When asked about Sterling's future after Sunday's game, Maresca said: "I don't know. The only thing I can say is that it was a technical decision and in the next day, we will want to sit and clarify the situation but it is nothing more than that.
"For all the players, they are Chelsea players. If they are going to be Chelsea players, then we will try to use them but no more than technical decision."
On whether he wants him to stay, Maresca added: "I want Raheem Sterling but I want all the 30 players we have. But there is no space for all of them. So for some of them, they have to leave."
