Celtic Fan View: Hoops show quality and character to bounce back after PSG hammering

There was only one thing on Celtic’s agenda this weekend and it was to return to winning ways against Ross County. The humbling the side took against Paris Saint-Germain was still fresh in everyone’s minds but there was absolutely no way the Bhoys could afford a slip up at home to The Staggies. Especially with a derby against Rangers on the horizon.

Brendan Rodgers got his tactics and line up wrong in midweek but he decided to shake things up on Saturday which was a good call. The Northern Irishman made five changes in personnel which included the return of Moussa Dembele who found the back of the net. It gave Parkhead a lift, freshened the team up and allowed some legs to be rested ahead of the trip to Ibrox next week.

The Celts resembled their dominant selves again. It wasn’t just the 4-0 scoreline which underlined their superiority but the overall performance which will please many a fan. The champions ended the game with 70% possession and 30 attempts at goal which highlights how one-sided this affair was.

Having suffered such a disappointing loss when there was so much expectation surrounding the PSG game, this actually had the potential to be a banana skin for Rodgers and co. County are known for their organisation and ability to frustrate the opposition; not to mention they were one of the few sides to take points Celtic from last term. The last thing the Hoops needed was a poor display and restlessness in the stands.

With wind taken from their sails and some fragility lingering- especially in defence- a response was needed and this definitely went some way to preparing for next week’s showdown. As Rodgers put it: “It’s always a mark of a good side if you can respond, score four goals, keep a clean sheet and put in a really good performance.”

The 3-1-4-2 allowed Dembele and Leigh Griffiths to play as a partnership with some quality firepower behind them in James Forrest, Stuart Armstrong, Tom Rogic and Jonny Hayes. That attacking talent was overwhelming for County as three of those six players were on target. There was a good mix of pace in the wide areas, creativity from deep and late bursts into the box from the midfielders with plenty of service for the front two.

If there’s a worry heading into next week it’s the obvious issues at the back. Dedryck Boyata and Erik Sviatchenko aren’t available yet so the Bhoys will be without a recognised central defender to partner Jozo Simunovic for another huge encounter. If Rodgers reverts to a four-man defence again it’s likely Anthony Ralston will be deployed at right-back.

The teenager was given a harsh lesson in midweek against Neymar and co but he showed composure and a strong mentality to bounce back with a solid performance. It mirrored the rest of the team in many ways, a display of spirit and togetherness which was exactly what the doctor ordered after midweek.
