Celtic’s young guns continued their strong start to the UEFA Youth League league phase by making it three home wins from three in a tight 1-0 win over Club Brugge on Wednesday afternoon.

The young Celtic side went into the game on six points from four games, having beaten Slovan Bratislava’s youth side and RB Leipzig’s talented academy stars - just like the first-team have done in the UEFA Champions League - albeit with losses away at Borussia Dortmund sandwiched in between them.

They came up against a Brugge side who had failed to win any of their four games in the competition so far, despite solid draws against Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan’s young sides - and having lost 6-2 at home to Aston Villa’s starlets in the previous game week, they were set to seek vengeance against Stephen McManus’ men at The City Stadium in Mount Florida.

However, it was the Hoops who got off to a perfect start when Daniel Cummings fired home for his fifth goal in the UEFA Youth League this campaign, notching inside ten minutes to give his side an early lead. The forward watched a well-worked move blossom down the left-flank, and upon receiving a pass into his path, he converted with a left-footed strike to give Celtic the advantage.

More chances fell their way, with Mitchel Frame seeing an effort blocked in the area, whilst Kyle Ure also had a striker saved. Francis Turley then hit the crossbar with a corner, and any notion of a Brugge attack was thwarted by Aidan Rice, with the stopper failing to be properly tested by the away side.

Celtic couldn’t add a goal, but they saw the game out to notch a 1-0 win - and after three wins from five, they sit comfortably in 11th - with the top 22 teams going through to the next round of the tournament. It’s likely that just one more win will see them qualify for the next phase, and with trips to Dinamo Zagreb and Aston Villa coming between a home tie against Young Boys, they may comfortably progress.
