Celtics' Jaylen Brown done for the season with wrist injury

The Boston Celtics announced on Monday that forward Jaylen Brown needs surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left wrist and will miss the rest of the season.

"This past weekend Celtics forward Jaylen Brown was diagnosed with a torn scapholunate ligament in his left wrist," a Celtics statement reads. "Brown is expected to have the torn ligament surgically repaired later this week, and will be out for the remainder of the 2020-21 season."

The All-Star forward had missed three straight games with a right ankle sprain. He's also dealt with shoulder, knee and hip ailments while missing 10 games this season. It's not clear when or how he suffered the wrist injury.

Tough road ahead for Celtics

Brown's injury arrives with the Celtics battling to avoid the Eastern Conference play-in games featuring the No. 7 through No. 10 seeds. The Celtics entered Monday in seventh place in the East at 35-33 with four games remaining, two games behind the sixth-place Miami Heat.

Brown's absence will make their already long-shot chance of avoiding the play-in games even less likely.

Injury cuts breakout season short

Brown, 24, was in the midst of a career season, averaging 24.7 points, six rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 48.4% from the field and 39.7% from 3-point distance. A fifth-year NBA veteran, he made his first All-Star game in March.

The Celtics didn't provide a long-term prognosis in their announcement.
