Everton Fan View: Cenk Tosun the latest player on scrapheap

Cenk Tosun has not been given a run of games to prove his worth

Everton are developing a terrible habit of buying players for a lot of money and not playing them. The latest player to fall into the category is Cenk Tosun, the player we bought from Besiktas for £27m in January.

Everton have desperately needed a striker since selling Romelu Lukaku in the summer. In Tosun, it appeared that Everton had finally found the man that they were looking for after a long search. He has only has a handful of minutes on the pitch, but has looked isolated in his appearances so far. He’s not been given much of a chance, but must not be impressing in training.

We won’t get to see how good he is though until he had a run of games in the Premier League, which he doesn’t look like getting anytime soon. Sam Allardyce appears to be favouring Dominic Calvert-Lewin or Oumar Niasse over him, and leaving him on the side-lines.

It’s hard to understand the thinking behind it as we need to find out how good he is. Against Crystal Palace we were 3-0 up and Allardyce decided to bring on the unpopular Schneiderlin for Gueye. It was a very odd substitution which was booed by the fans. It would have been a perfect opportunity to give our new striker more minutes, but Allardyce didn’t want to for some reason.

Huge wastes of money?

The manager clearly doesn’t like him, just as he didn’t like the likes of Davy Klaassen and Sandro Ramirez. Everton have wasted an incredible amount of money recently. Around about £90m has been spent since Director of Football Steve Walsh arrived at the club on players who aren’t in the first team.

If Tosun isn’t good enough, serious questions need to be asked about Walsh’s continued role at the club. He was meant to come in as a maverick scout who helped Leicester win the league, but instead it has been a complete disaster. It appears the Leicester story was more luck than judgement. There have been repeated failures which have badly affected the club.

Players need to play though in order to adapt to a new league and find out if they are good enough. At the moment that isn’t happening and it’s extremely frustrating. Tosun needs to play as we still need a striker. By the summer hopefully we have a new manager who is able to get the most out of these players.

Allardyce is just sticking with the players he can trust, but it’s frustrating the fans and isn’t good for the long-term future of the club. This season has been a nightmare for many reasons, and it’s currently a nightmare of Cenk Tosun. He needs minutes on the pitch, or it’ll be yet more money wasted.
