With Liverpool arguably in need of a long-term plan for its number six position, there is an option available on the market that big clubs around Europe are taking into consideration. The Reds have even been told previously to make a move for the player.

According to the French outlet L'Equipe, Arsenal, AC Milan, Atletico Madrid and PSG are all in transfer talks over a move for AS Monaco midfielder Youssouf Fofana, with the 25-year-old expected to leave the Ligue 1 side this summer. Only under contract for one more year in France, his side is prepared to cash in.

Having looked at Bruno Guimaraes and Martin Zubimendi, Fofana would be a cheaper option for Arsenal to pursue. Expected to cost around $22m (£17m/€20m), the Gunners also looked at the 17-cap France international last summer before signing Declan Rice from West Ham.

Highly rated, Cesc Fabregas even told Liverpool to sign Fofana a couple of seasons ago. "When I came, Thierry (Henry) and Vadim (Vasilyev) also asked me to help grow the young people," Fabregas, the then-35-year-old, RMC Sport in 2022.

"It was an important point," he said. "Today, I feel like I have won the respect and sympathy of this younger generation. I hope I have helped. We like each other. I will continue to follow them [and] exchange with them. I would like to see (Youssouf) Fofana, (Sofiane) Diop or (Aurelien) Tchouameni at Bayern or Liverpool!"

Diop moved to Nice in that same summer while Tchouameni was a player that Liverpool wanted before he ended up at Real Madrid. Fofana, meanwhile, has stayed at Monaco, at least for now, though it looks like that might not be the case for much longer.

Liverpool.com says: Fofana is a good player and it is interesting to see that he has remained in France for so long when there were other clubs sniffing around him. Liverpool is more in need of a center-back and another forward this summer than an extra midfielder, though some added depth in that department would be no bad thing.

Whether Fofana would be on the Reds' radar, though, is perhaps doubtful. He was a player who could have been signed last summer had the desire been there, when Liverpool's need was far greater. It certainly sounds more likely that a move to Arsenal, AC Milan, Atletico Madrid and PSG could be on the table.
