Chael Sonnen Lands Pro Wrestling Gig

Chael Sonnen Lands Pro Wrestling Gig

Former UFC fighter Chael Sonnen has finally made the jump to professional wrestling.

Though there have long been rumors linking Sonnen to professional wrestling, most of those rumors centered on WWE. But that’s not where the eagle has landed.

Sonnen instead has inked a deal with the new Global Force Wrestling, where he will serve as an expert analyst.

“Chael Sonnen is someone we’ve talked about for a long time,” said Jeff Jarrett, GFW founder and CEO. “He’s not one to shy from speaking his mind, and we’re all eager to see what he has to say about the GFW athletes.”

Sonnen is retired from mixed martial arts competition after having been handed a two-year suspension by the Nevada Athletic Commission in July of 2014. The suspensions stems from two random drug tests that indicated a combined total of five banned substances in his system.

Although he retired from MMA following the suspension, Sonnen has remained active in submission grappling, having competed under the Metamoris banner. He is slated to compete against another former UFC fighter in Renato “Babalu” Sobral at Saturday’s Metamoris VI.

Sonnen’s gig with GFW begins this summer, as the fledgling wrestling promotion begins taping shows in Las Vegas in July. Current plans call for the GFW Las Vegas TV tapings will take place on Friday, July 24; Friday, August 21; and Friday, October 23.

There had been no word from Sonnen at the time of publication on whether or not he might consider ever stepping out of his analyst role and into the ring for GFW.
