Giroud, the France international, had been benched for the Community Shield win over Manchester City and the season opener against Crystal Palace, with younger Yaya Sanogo starting those matches.

There is also a Champions League debut for young defender Calum Chambers, who joined from Southampton for £16m in the summer.

Arsenal's World Cup winning Germany stars Mesut Ozil, Lukas Podolski and Per Mertesacker are again rested as Arsene Wenger gives them time off following their exploits in Brazil.

ARSENAL XI: Szczesny, Debuchy, Chambers, Koscielny, Monreal, Arteta, Wilshere, Ramsey, Alexis, Cazorla, Giroud
