Champions League Final: bettingexpert preview - Bale bang in form for Real Madrid but king Ronaldo still holds the key

Two years on from the heartbreaking sight of Sergio Ramos’ last-gasp header flying past Thibaut Courtois to take the Champions League final into extra-time, Atletico Madrid have a chance at redemption.

They gave their all in Lisbon, only for fierce rivals Real to steamroller them in the extra period for their 10th European Cup trophy with Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo on the scoresheet.

This time around, Atletico have impressively seen off Barcelona and Bayern Munich in the quarters and semis to get another shot while the Bernabeu giants have made hard work of Wolfsburg and Manchester City.

One thing that has not changed is how crucial Bale and Ronaldo are to Zinedine Zidane’s side, the Welsh flyer turning in some sensational displays of late that have eclipsed his iconic team-mate.

Ronaldo’s annual duel with Lionel Messi for new entries in the goalscoring record books has taken a back seat to his importance in Zidane’s attack alongside the former Tottenham Hotspur forward.

There is no doubt that Bale has hit an intoxicating rhythm currently with the mercurial Luka Modric pulling the strings in midfield, nevertheless Ronaldo seems to produce when it comes down to the crunch more often than not.

Thanks to bettingexpert, we can see how Ronaldo’s goals have contributed to Real victories down the years together with the other teams he has played in.

He started out fairly slowly, by his own stellar standards, at Sporting Lisbon before really hitting his straps at Manchester United where he was on the winning side in 65% of his United games - scoring in 44% of those victories.

It was his switch to join the galácticos in Madrid, though, that really saw his importance skyrocket.

Real have won nearly 75% of the matches Ronaldo has appeared in and, even more impressively, he has scored in approximately the same percentage of those triumphs.

Much like Messi and rumoured United signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic, he feeds off the adrenaline of playing in big games and showing the football world who is boss.

Even though Ronaldo is coming into the final off the back of a dead leg picked up in training, Diego Godin, Atletico’s scorer in the 2014 final, will need to keep his defence on high alert at all times.

Juanfran, in particular, will be keen to exorcise the demons of 2014 when his injury late in the game saw Real run riot down his flank during the extra period.

Bale, Antoine Griezmann and Saul Niguez are the names on most people’s lips heading into the showpiece event, however you get the feeling it is still Ronaldo who will be the decisive factor in Milan.
