The Welsh winger joined the Spanish giants for a world record £86 million fee last summer, but, despite 21 goals and 16 assists for Los Galacticos in league and Champions League competition, Morientes believes that more is expected of Bale from the fans.
Morientes watched Bale and the rest of his Real Madrid teammates come from behind to beat city rivals Atletico 4-1 and claim 'La Decima' – the club's tenth European Cup – the Spaniard insisted that Real's No. 11 must improve next season.
“He's been up and down this season,” said Morientes, who won three Champions League medals during his eight-year spell with Real.
“He can be happy with what he has achieved during his first year in Spain, but he's playing alongside some of the world's best players, like Cristiano Ronaldo, who continues to improve every year.
“Bale has had a few injuries, but, even when he has been fully fit, his formed has dipped. You must be consistently good to play for Real Madrid.
“He's got a good amount of goals and assists but the Real Madrid fans expect a lot, especially when you cost €100 million (£86m).
“However, this is only his first season so we can judge next year.”
Fernando Morientes was speaking during some public relations work for Champions League sponsors Heineken at their #ShareTheSofa event in Ibiza.
