Messi's brace also meant he became the first man to score more than one goal in 15 Champions League matches, while he also equalled Raul's record of finding the target in 19 different cities in Europe's premier club competition.

Like Mexes, the central defender also scored with a finish more suited to a prolific striker - a volley to seal victory over Celtic and keep alive the Portuguese side's hopes.

LB: Christian Fuchs (Schalke) - Expert 8, Users 6.8

The 26-year-old left-back scored his first goal in 11 months to fire Schalke into the last 16 with a pin-point strike from distance.

CM: João Moutinho (Porto) - Expert 8, Users 8.3

The Portuguese maestro scored one and created two in another midfield masterclass in Porto's win over Dinamo Zagreb.

CM: Sofiane Feghouli (Valencia) - Expert 8, Users 7.9

Another bright Champions League performance from the young Algerian who capped a lively all-around performance with a deflected solo goal.

AMR: Mario Goetze (Borussia Dortmund) - Expert 8, Users 8.9

Scored a superb solo effort and had a hand in the other three Dortmund goals. Another example of why he is one of the most talked about playmakers in Europe.

ACM: Rui Pedro (CFR Cluj) - Expert 9, Users 8.6

The Portuguese midfielder grabbed a first-half hat-trick and entering the history books as the first man to score a hat-trick for a Romanian side.

AML: Lukas Podoloski (Arsenal) - Expert 8, Users 8.5

The Germany forward was a marauding presence on the left for Arsenal, and scored a magnificent goal.

FW: Lionel Messi (Barcelona) - Expert 9, Users 8.5

With two goals, an assist, the constant danger of even more and a truckload more records shattered, there was never any alternative as to the identity of our player of the week.
