Gary Rowett has suggested he would be interested in the chance to succeed Mark Robins at Coventry City.

Experienced Championship manager Rowett, 50, has been out of work since leaving his post as interim boss at Birmingham City in May. Rowett wasn’t able to save Blues from relegation to League One despite collecting 11 points from his eight games in charge – including a 3-0 win over the Sky Blues in April.

Rowett has spent the vast majority of his managerial career inside the Championship’s top half with Birmingham (during his first spell between 2014 and 2016), Derby County – where he secured a sixth-placed finish – and Millwall.

While Rowett has featured in the betting for the Sky Blues gig, higher profile candidates Ruud van Nistelrooy, Frank Lampard and Lee Carsley could be more popular choices with owner Doug King. It was reported on Friday that King has whittled down applicants to a shortlist.

Asked about the job at the CBS Arena, Rowett told Give Me Sport: “I have an agent who does the work for me and contacts clubs who have a vacancy. I’m running out of Midlands clubs! But what I would say is that Coventry is a big club. Coventry would be a fantastically attractive club for any Championship manager. And Burton Albion is another one. I have been there before and helped them out.”

He added: “Interviews are definitely different now. Now you have a lot of sporting directors in position and clubs want a manager to fit into their sustainable model.

“When I first started, the interview was basically just a chat. You still had to do your prep, but you could have all the knowledge in your head. Now you present your game model. Every club operates differently, but I have been in interviews where they have done psychometric testing. You are sometimes asked to analyse games and players and even recommend signings to improve the squad.”
