Leeds United look to have a clear path to the signing of Club Brugges forward Charles De Ketelaere, with AC Milan reportedly ready to ditch their interest once and for all.

The Whites are known to already have an offer on the table for the exciting forward. However, Milan’s interest created a major roadblock in their hopes of sealing the transfer of the Belgium international.

Indeed, Milan technical director Paulo Maldini made the trip to Brugges during the week to get the deal done.

However, the legendary Milan defender was unable to get Brugges to drop their asking price. Despite that, Maldini still stated a deal could be struck.

Speaking to reporters, as relayed by Sempre Milan, the Italian was remaining positive.

‘How did it go?’ Maldini was asked, to which he replied: ‘Good’.

He was then asked: ‘Is there a confidence?’, to which he responded ‘Let’s try!’.

But now Belgian outlet HLN claims that the Serie A giants are ready to completely pull the plug on the transfer.

That has opened the door for Elland Road transfer chiefs to strengthen one of two positions.

Two positions still need Leeds attention

Jesse Marsch is known to want a new striker and a left-back, with Junior Firpo’s injury forcing him out of the first month of the new season.

And, according to HLN‘s report, it appears to be now or never in Leeds‘ chase for De Ketelaere.

The Whites currently have a £31.5million offer on the table. However, HLN adds that Brugges have softened their stance over the fee and will now accept a figure closer to £30m.

Personal terms are not expected to be an issue either for the 21-year-old, who has won eight Belgium caps.

De Ketelaere scored 18 goals and added 10 assists for Brugges last season and was dubbed ‘the next Kevin De Bruyne’.

His potential arrival in west Yorkshire will provide immediate competition for an injury-plagued Patrick Bamford.

The England striker is back in pre-season action and building up his fitness ahead of the new campaign.

But having a player of De Ketelaere’s ability to challenge Bamford will be hugely beneficial for Marsch. The Belgian is also capable of playing in a No.10 role, with his versatility an extra selling point for Brugges.

Leeds begin the new Premier League season with a home clash against Wolves on August 6.
