Leeds United target Charles De Ketelaere refused to play for Club Brugge in their opening game of the season over the weekend, according to a report in Belgium.

It’s a transfer saga which is threatening to turn ugly with Leeds left scratching their heads. The West Yorkshire side are desperate for a new frontman and have an offer on the table worth around €40m.

Club Brugge are said to be more than happy to accept that kind of money, but the player wants a move to AC Milan.

HLN, via Sport Witness, have reported that the situation is getting affecting De Ketelaere, who refused to play, with the Belgian club saying the situation is “a bit too much” for the 21-year-old.

Brugge kicked off their season with a 3-2 home win over Genk, but De Ketelaere did not feature.

The forward missed the opener “at his own request” and the outlet suggest it was partly the player’s state of mind as to why he opted out of the squad. But also his entourage are trying to put pressure on the club to get a deal done.

De Ketelaere was instead spotted in the stands wearing a cap with the word ‘Freedom’ on it.

AC Milan still in running for De Ketelaere

Whether that was a message to the Belgian outfit is anyone’s guess. But Brugge like everyone else are waiting for Milan to come up with an acceptable offer.

They are yet to get near the sum that Brugge are demanding. But they remain interested and have not switched to other targets yet.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport (via SempreMilan), the rumours of Milan losing interest are very much unfounded. The Serie A side are still in the running to sign De Ketelaere.

Apparently they are ready to slightly raise their bid to get closer to the €35m asking price. And a new attempt for the player is expected in the next 48 hours.

If they fail then, Milan will go after cheaper options. And the Belgian source suggest Hakim Ziyech on loan from Chelsea or Piotr Zielinski from Napoli or Nicolo Zaniolo from Roma could fit the bill.
