Australia’s indigenous all-stars displayed an inherent lack of composure in front of goal in Saturday’s first test defeat to Ireland.
The worst offender was Geelong’s Steven Motlop, who contrived to rattle the crossbar from five yards out. With Ireland goalkeeper Paddy O’Rouke stranded, yet diving, Motlop let rip with comedic results.
Speaking to TheScore.ie after the 57-35 win, Ireland’s Paul Flynn was still in shock over the miss. “They hit the cross bar,” he recalled. “I don’t know how they did it. It was nearly harder to do that than score. That could have been a big swing if they’d got that goal.”

Motlop will get the opportunity to redeem himself at Croke Park in the second test next Saturday.
