The chances of Denzel Dumfries leaving Inter Milan in 2023 seem to be increasing – and a report has named Chelsea as one of the main clubs who could take advantage.

Dumfries was given the fairly tough task of replacing Achraf Hakimi at Inter in 2021 following the Moroccan’s move to Paris Saint-Germain. Hakimi had been a key part of the Nerazzurri’s title-winning side that had to be dismantled for financial reasons.

Inter went on to invest in Dumfries from Feyenoord for a much cheaper sum than the figure they had received for Hakimi. To the Dutchman’s credit, he has done a fairly good job of following in his predecessor’s footsteps.

In his debut season with Inter, Dumfries contributed five goals and seven assists from 45 appearances. However, this season, he has only managed two goals and three assists from 20 games so far.

In the background, there have been some exit rumours for the 26-year-old. The Premier League could be his next destination; indeed, there have been links with Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

Man Utd need a new right-back to replace Aaron Wan-Bissaka as Diogo Dalot’s main competitor. Meanwhile, a move to Tottenham could reunite Dumfries with Antonio Conte. The former Inter head coach hasn’t settled on a preferred right wing-back for Spurs.

But according to Calciomercatoweb, it is Chelsea “above all” who are looking at Dumfries.

At present, Chelsea have Reece James and Cesar Azpilicueta as their main options at right-back. However, James has encountered some injury issues and Azpilicueta is getting towards the end of his career, which he may see out more centrally.

Hence, Chelsea might need to reinforce at right-back and have apparently identified Dumfries as someone who can be of use to them.

Denzel Dumfries available for tempting price – but might not end up in Premier League

Promisingly, the report from Calciomercatoweb claims that Inter’s asking price for Dumfries has dropped significantly. In the summer, they would have wanted €50million for him, but now, since his form hasn’t been as thrilling in recent months, they might listen to offers of €30million.

In other words, if Chelsea were to bid £26million or so, they might stand a good chance of signing him. It would be a tempting price given the output he is capable of, and the fact he is entering his prime years.

That said, it might not be Chelsea – or anyone else in the Premier League – who gets to enjoy Dumfries’ services next.

According to Calciomercatoweb, Bayern Munich are now the latest “top club” to enter the race for Dumfries.

Benjamin Pavard has indicated an interest in testing himself elsewhere. In turn, the Bundesliga champions might need another option at right-back.

They signed Noussair Mazaroui from Ajax over the summer, but could turn to another Dutch-born ace in Dumfries to ensure they have enough cover there.

Either the Premier League or the Bundesliga would be a new challenge for Dumfries. He adapted well initially to his Serie A test, so could have the attributes to make an impact either way.
