Chelsea have seemingly wrapped up the signing of another attacking talent for the long term, after a report explained how close they are to acquiring a Norwich City star.

Since Todd Boehly’s ownership group took charge of Chelsea, they have invested in several young talents for the future, without necessarily having immediate roles in the first team in mind for them. Indeed, despite being the biggest spenders in each of the past two transfer windows, they haven’t solely focused on established players.

For example, in the summer, they brought in the likes of Omari Hutchinson and Cesare Casadei, primarily as players to develop gradually over the years ahead.

Likewise, the winter window saw them bring in youngsters like Andrey Santos and Jimmy-Jay Morgan. Each of them might have to wait a while for their respective debuts.

Now, ahead of their second summer with Boehly at the helm, Chelsea are preparing to put further energy towards adding to their young core for the future.

According to a report from Football Insider, Chelsea have “agreed” to sign Norwich City winger, Alex Matos.

It follows similar claims from Fabrizio Romano recently, who indicated Matos would become part of Chelsea’s under-21 setup.

The 18-year-old has been playing at under-21 level for Norwich this season, but is still awaiting his senior debut. However, he will be out of contract at Carrow Road by the end of the season.

Therefore, Chelsea have agreed “in principle” to sign him on a free transfer. Should he develop appropriately, he may have a chance of being considered for the first team further down the line.

Norwich eager to convince Chelsea to include contract clause

Although Chelsea would be signing Matos for free, they would have to pay compensation to Norwich due to his age. Interestingly, the report by Football Insider claims that the Championship side want to include a sell-on clause within their compensation package – echoing Romano’s initial indication that the deal would contain a form of add-ons.

Hence, although they are missing out on any money from Matos’ upcoming move, they could yet profit if and when he makes the next transfer of his career afterwards.

It seems Norwich know they are going to lose the winger, though. Indeed, Football Insider says he has told them he will not be signing a contract extension.

Therefore, Matos can look forward to a future with Chelsea. Only time will tell how much pressure he can put on their first team in the long term.

But having been around the England under-15 setup earlier in his career, Matos’ potential has been evident. Chelsea will hope their youth coaches can refine his game further in preparation for his senior career.

It is not yet clear how long the contract he will be signing at Stamford Bridge will last for. However, Chelsea will be hoping they have identified a useful talent for the future and that their faith will pay off in the long run.
