Frank Lampard can see Antonio Conte being given the boot by Chelsea this summer after watching Barcelona crush the Blues at the Camp Nou.

Lionel Messi was in majestic form to destroy the west Londoners in the second leg of their Champions League tie to move the Catalans into the quarter-finals.

Much like Manchester United, Chelsea’s season now rests with the FA Cup after a disappointing defence of their Premier League crown.

Lampard thinks the team has gone backwards since they strolled to the title last term and reckons ruthless owner Roman Abramovich could pull the trigger once again.

“The only problem here is looking at the bigger picture,” he told BT Sport. “Last year, Chelsea were winning the league comfortably but they lost a few big players. That was the time to go and get a couple of new ones.

“Morata was a big signing but he was on the bench. Bakayoko was a big signing and he was on the bench. Clubs like Chelsea, Man United and Tottenham want to be going to the end of these competitions.

“He [Conte] could certainly be gone because there’s been so much negative talk… whether it’s his decision or the club’s decision.

“He’s obviously a fantastic manager and in both of these legs it has not been anything to do with how he’s set his team up. Most of the Premier League clubs are now in a constant transition and the team has to evolve. Unfortunately for Chelsea they haven’t quite evolved this season.”

Conte appeared to have no regrets after watching arguably the game’s greatest ever player dismantle his Chelsea team in Spain.

“Tonight in the two legs, Lionel Messi made the difference,” he added. “We are talking about the best player in the world. Over the two legs we were a bit unlucky. We hit the post four times. In our best moment today they scored.

“They were very clinical. We created many chances. We are talking about a player (Messi) that every season he scores 60 goals. We are talking not about a top player but a super top player. He made the difference.

“We have no regrets. I must be pleased for the commitment. They gave everything tonight. We didn’t deserve to lose 3-0. During the game, from the bench and for me it was a clear penalty on Marcos Alonso. We have to go and move on and to prepare for the game against Leicester on Sunday.”
