Everton are preparing to move in for Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour after handing Frank Lampard the green light over his wishes, a report has claimed.

The Toffees are looking to get back to Premier League stability following a season fighting relegation. They started last term brightly, but a dismal set of results set in under Rafael Benitez.

Lampard consequently succeeded him and despite the claims that he only took Everton from 16th to 16th, they ensured their survival when it looked in serious peril.

And the mission now is to avoid a repeat, instead climbing back up the table where Everton want to be.

To do that, Lampard needs top signings and he is turning to his former club Chelsea for help. Indeed, Lampard wants to reunite with Scotland midfielder Gilmour, who he brought through to the Stamford Bridge first team so effectively.

According to talkSPORT, Lampard is now ‘ready’ to intensify his interest in snapping Gilmour up.

The Goodison Park club have given the manager the green light to go after the midfielder on loan. Chelsea would be reluctant to let a player of his talent leave.

However, they are aware he could struggle for first-team minutes next season amid his need for career development.

Gilmour is reportedly ‘keen’ to reunite with Lampard and hopefully enjoy a much better loan spell than last season. The Scot spent the campaign at Norwich, but their relegation did him no favours.

Everton have Gilmour transfer edge

Meanwhile, transfer journalist Pete O’Rourke has explained that Lampard’s connection with Gilmour gives them the edge over other interested parties for his signature.

“It does give them an edge, especially if it comes down to who Billy Gilmour wants to join,” O’Rourke told Football Fancast.

“If there’s several clubs in for him, it’s going to give maybe a slight advantage to Everton, to have the chance to work under Frank Lampard again, who gave him his debut at Chelsea and gave him a regular room in the side as well and got the best out of him.

“So I’m sure that will definitely come into the player’s thoughts if he is allowed to move on from Chelsea this summer.”

Chelsea man ready to move on

Gilmour has enjoyed a mixed time of his Chelsea career so far. He emerged as a breakthrough talent under Lampard before injury hit.

His subsequent loan at Norwich looked a good move at first, but he quickly realised he needed another club.

This summer, he has returned to Chelsea and in fact dropped out of the first-team’s pre-season tour.

Boss Thomas Tuchel insisted the decision was tough but ultimately came down to maximising the quality of training with his core group of players.

And that is a signal of where Gilmour is at – a young player looking to prove himself as his career develops.

Given Lampard was the manager who forged his breakthrough, an Everton loan move looks the best option for him.
