Chelsea have taken up their option to extend the contract of midfielder Billy Gilmour until the end of the 2023-24 season, the club have announced.

Gilmour’s previous contract at Stamford Bridge only had one more year left on it. However, it contained an option for Chelsea to prolong it by a further 12 months, which they have now activated.

The Scotland international spent the 2021-22 season away from Chelsea, who sent him on loan to Norwich City. After his return, they will now have to come up with new plans.

During his time with Norwich, Gilmour made 28 appearances. However, his side suffered relegation from the Premier League.

What the immediate future holds for Gilmour remains unclear. But he will now go into the next two years knowing he is contracted to Chelsea.

He originally signed for the Blues as an academy player from Rangers in 2017. His senior debut followed in 2019.

In total, Gilmour has played 22 times for the Chelsea first team. His contract extension could give him the chance to add to his tallies in the long run.

However, in the shorter term, perhaps it would be best for Gilmour to go out on loan again. A midfielder as experienced as Saul Niguez struggled to get gametime for Chelsea last season, so Gilmour would likely struggle for regular starts.

Chelsea get flexibility for Gilmour plans

Still only 21 years old, there is plenty of time for him to develop elsewhere. Indeed, that has seemed to be Chelsea’s policy in recent years for young players.

Gilmour should continue to follow it, with the extra year on his contract now giving Chelsea some flexibility as to those plans.

TEAMtalk was told one month ago that Chelsea are ready to lend Gilmour away again. One club who could take him would be Rangers.

A return north of the border – and to the club where he developed – may make sense. He would be playing for a team with high standards, so it seems to be a good solution in terms of getting him up to speed for a potential Chelsea future.
