Chelsea choose obscure striker solution as Boehly prepares ‘most prestigious’ bid for side’s top scorer

Chelsea are the ‘most prestigious’ suitors for Sturm Graz striker Emanuel Emegha as they seek attacking reinforcements, a report has claimed.

The centre-forward position has been problematic for Chelsea in recent years. They have seen big signings such as Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku fail to replicate the kind of form that encouraged them to buy them in the first place.

This season, Chelsea’s most natural centre-forward is Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but the ex-Arsenal captain has also failed to convince since returning to the Premier League.

Consequently, the high-spending Chelsea will need to address the issue in the summer after a disastrous season that has seen them sink to the bottom half of the table.

Some high-pedigree strikers have been suggested as potential targets, such as Napoli’s Victor Osimhen or Tottenham’s Harry Kane.

But according to Foot Mercato, another option under consideration at Stamford Bridge is Sturm Graz’s Emegha.

Just 20 years old, Emegha has outscored all his teammates in Austria this season. He has scored nine goals from 32 appearances in all competitions.

Those figures might not make him as attractive a target as Kane or Osimhen, but he could be brought to west London as one for the future, just like David Datro Fofana was when signing from Molde earlier this year.

Emegha is under contract with Sturm Graz – who have recently won the Austrian Cup – until 2026 after joining them from Royal Antwerp back in August.

The report from Foot Mercato does not mention how much it might take for Chelsea or anyone else to sign him. But aware of Emegha’s potential to have a ‘golden future’, they are apparently keen not to miss out.

The Netherlands youth international, who came through the ranks at Sparta Rotterdam, is described by Foot Mercato as ‘very tall and very fast’. His ‘great mobility’ is one of his standout attributes, especially for someone of a 6 ft 4 frame.

Chelsea need to sign proven striker

Even if Chelsea are to sign Emegha, it would still seem necessary for them to add a more proven centre-forward to stand above him in the pecking order. Chelsea have only scored 31 goals from 33 Premier League matches this season, which is the second worst tally of any team currently outside the relegation zone.

Owner Todd Boehly has been throwing money – perhaps not very sensibly – at their issues in the past two transfer windows. Chelsea have been buying players for the present and the future, stockpiling their squad.

The group has become unmanageable, judging by the difficulties faced by head coaches Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter and Frank Lampard this season.

But Chelsea seem to still be scouring the market for prospects they can add to their ranks, with the hope of them maturing into important players in years to come.
