Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella admits he had to Google summer signing Enzo Fernandez while watching him at the World Cup.

The Blues have spent around £600m over the last couple of transfer windows with a number of big-name arrivals heading to Stamford Bridge.

One of the most high-profile signings was Enzo Fernandez – who signed for Chelsea from Benfica in January for a British-record £106.8m – after winning Young Player of the Tournament at the World Cup.

Cucurella, who moved to Chelsea in the summer from Brighton, took a keen interest in Argentina’s matches at the World Cup with his former team-mate Alexis Mac Allister playing.

And Cucurella remembers having to search for Argentina star Fernandez on his phone during one of the matches before the midfielder joined Chelsea later that winter.

“I liked to watch matches in which my friends were playing, so I was watching Argentina because of Alexis,” Cucurella told the South American edition of ESPN’s Sports Center.

“I think I said, ‘I really like number 24, he’s very good!’ But I didn’t even know where he played! I had to go and search on my phone!

“As I watched more games, I told my family and friends that I really liked him a lot. And then he came to Chelsea!

“I told Enzo that I had liked him at the World Cup. He’s a good guy, I’m waiting for him to cook me a barbeque.

“He is very young, but he is very talented with the ball and he is intelligent. He’s still adapting but he’s already played some good games. We have [signed] a great midfielder.”

Chelsea boss Graham Potter has welcomed the international break with the former Brighton manager hoping to “recharge” during the two-week hiatus.

Speaking after their 2-2 draw against Everton, Potter said: “I always say, these breaks, you can’t do anything about them. You just take them for what they are. It’s been an intense few weeks, so we’ll take the break. We’ve had a decent week. Today was a performance that was a positive one for us, but ultimately we’re frustrated to drop points.

“It’s an intense period coming up, April and May will be heavy. It’s important for me as the leader to gain some freshness and to recharge and to use the time.

“I’m probably going to close my eyes for a few hours, or try to. I’ll spend some time with the family and then we’ll see.”
