Chelsea could be set to do the unthinkable and not sign anyone on deadline day. Despite being one of the most active clubs across the world once more this summer, the Blues have not found it easy to complete their business in the final weeks of the window.

Faced with a huge group of players in a bomb squad, exiled away from the first team and training alone, the priority has been to cut down the wider numbers at Cobham. In the midst of this, Chelsea also chose to add Joao Felix and Pedro Neto to their attack.

Now, though, with Nicolas Jackson on the verge of entering his second year at the club as the only fit senior striker, things have taken a turn for the worse. Having held talks with numerous centre-forwards across Europe - Samu Omorodion, Jonathan David, and Jhon Duran form just three of a far from exhaustive list - Chelsea have hit a deadline day nightmare.

The club are still fighting to sign Victor Osimhen from Napoli, who is a clear priority as shown by the presence of co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart in Italy, but are not in the clear. Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli have reached a club-to-club agreement to sign the Nigerian, football.london understands.

Chelsea have made their own pitch to Osimhen, making a bid of an initial loan deal plus an obligation to buy, but are yet to strike gold on personal terms. Work is still to be done in order to fit Osimhen's demands into their wage structure and have him commit to London rather than the Middle East.

It is viewed as unlikely (but not impossible) that a deal is done at this stage. With the deadline day window slamming shut at 11pm on Friday, Chelsea could still turn to their backups.

However, hope of that being Ivan Toney has been heavily affected. Like Osimhen, Toney has had an offer from Al-Ahli accepted by Brentford with salary agreements also reached. Unlike Osimhen, Toney has given the go-ahead for the move.

At this stage it is not yet clear what the impact of one completed transfer to Saudi Arabia might be for the other. It is also not certain if both deals can happen due to foreign player registration rules in the Pro League.

What is more obvious is that Chelsea are on the back foot with regards to the pair and face a big challenge to get one over the line. Chelsea working on a number of possible recruits including Jadon Sancho as well, but the extent of interest for No.9s has so far been mostly towards Toney and Osimhen in the past week.
