Chelsea vs Aston Villa - LIVE!

Romelu Lukaku dispatched two dead-eye finishes for his first Stamford Bridge goals as Chelsea saw off Aston Villa 3-0 to move second in the Premier League.

Mateo Kovacic teed up Lukaku’s opener then later punished Tyrone Mings’ loose back-pass for a goal of his own.

Lukaku then rifled in an unstoppable left-footed strike to make it three goals in as many Premier League appearances this term, extending Chelsea’s unbeaten start to four matches.

The Blues have matched leaders Manchester United’s three wins and a draw in the new campaign, trailing the Red Devils only on goals scored.

Powerful hitman Lukaku greeted his maiden Stamford Bridge goal by mimicking an archer in celebration.

The 28-year-old has already proved himself every inch the sharpshooter extraordinaire, just three games into his second Chelsea stint.

Romelu Lukaku speaks to Sky Sports

19:58 , Harry Latham-Coyle

“It is my dream,” Lukaku says of scoring his first goals at Stamford Bridge. “Since I was eleven I have worked hard for this moment. It was an important game for us. We showed the will to win from the first minute. Villa were pressing us very hard and made life very difficult for us.

“Playing in Italy I would have maybe one or two chances a game and I would have to take them. I am very happy with the situation I am in.

“The contact on the second was good. I got it out of my feet quickly and I do a lot of finishing work day-in, day-out - that’s good training. The work has to keep going.”

Chelsea 3-0 Aston Villa

19:54 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Job done for Chelsea - but they had to work for it...

600!

19:45 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Full Time: Chelsea 3-0 Aston Villa

19:32 , Harry Latham-Coyle

The scoreline reflects a different game to the one that played out at Stamford Bridge, for Aston Villa did not deserve to be on the end of a defeat of this nature. Dean Smith’s men were the better side during the first 50 minutes or so, and how they might rue not taking one of a string of good first half chances.

FULL TIME! CHELSEA 3-0 ASTON VILLA

19:24 , Harry Latham-Coyle

GOAL! CHELSEA 3-0 Aston Villa (Romelu Lukaku, 90 + 3 minutes)

19:22 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Three for Chelsea! Two for Romelu Lukaku and what a finish it is!

The Belgian rifles home in quite outstanding fashion, driving across the ball on his left foot and finding the top corner perfectly to fully seal things.

90 + 1 minutes

19:20 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Jorginho will head off for a little bit of extra treatment, which means we may play beyond the additional four minutes signalled on the board.

90 minutes

19:19 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A booking for John McGinn, and fair enough, too - that’s not a particularly nasty lunge but a lunge nonetheless as he overruns a ball that Jorginho is keen to nick.

Matt Targett also goes into the book for his reaction to his teammate’s caution.

Jorginho stays down, concerningly.

87 minutes

19:15 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Still Villa work the ball hither and thither looking for openings that appear increasingly rare. Antonio Rudiger stoops to put his head in harm’s way and dome away a cross.

84 minutes

19:13 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Oohs and aahs from the Chelsea fans like children on Bonfire Night as John McGinn produces a wild, sliced effort that introduces itself to fans some five metres left of Edouard Mendy’s goal. It just hasn’t happened for Aston Villa in this second half.

82 minutes

19:11 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Also getting ten minutes or so will be Timo Werner. Callum Hudson-Odoi draws a healthy reception from the home fans as Thomas Tuchel concludes the wing-cum-wing-back-cum wing’s evening.

80 minutes

19:09 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Marvelous Nakamba replaces Douglas Luiz in midfield as Aston Villa just start to look a little leggy in there. Mendy saves again, simply, from Ollie Watkins’ hopeful effort from range.

78 minutes

19:08 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A nervy moment for Edouard Mendy, who nearly fumbles what should be a simple collection from another floated Aston Villa corner. He gives Axel Tuanzebe a fierce side-eye as the defender slyly tries to knock his ankles as Mendy rushes forward in the hopes of sparking a counter - naughty from Tuanzebe, but he won’t be doing that again. If looks could kill...

75 minutes

19:05 , Harry Latham-Coyle

So close! Marcos Alonso fires on the turn across goal and nearly finds the far corner, a trademark strike to a ball tumbling on a half-hop and not far away at all from the left-hand upright with Jed Steer well beaten.

74 minutes

19:02 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Another half-chance! Ezri Konsa is a proper presence in the opposition box and rises highest once more, but, as has been the case before today, can’t get the requisite purchase on a floated ball-in to truly trouble Edouard Mendy.

73 minutes

19:01 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Just wide! Bertrand Traore stays on his feet as he is caught by Jorginho’s outstretched leg, choosing to unfurl a shot that appears briefly to be destined for the far corner, but drifts wide...

Thanks to a touch so it will be a Villa corner...

71 minutes

19:00 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Callum Hudson-Odoi is now playing from the left but Matty Cash, who continues to produce a solid performance, is managing him well, timing his tackle attempts perfectly even as Hudson-Odoi tries to razzle-dazzle him with flashing stepovers.

69 minutes

18:57 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Might this spark something? Bertrand Traore scored on the final day last year to help Aston Villa to victory and is sent for by Dean Smith at this juncture. The former Chelsea forward replaces Danny Ings.

68 minutes

18:56 , Harry Latham-Coyle

The game has settled into something of a holding pattern, with both sides just feeling things out again.

Mateo Kovacic doubled Chelsea’s lead after an error from Tyrone Mings

18:55 , Harry Latham-Coyle

64 minutes

18:54 , Harry Latham-Coyle

And Chelsea make their second change - Hudson-Odoi will be advanced into an attacking role on the left as Cesar Azpilicueta slaps the hands of the replaced Kai Havertz. Two better steadying influences than Jorginho and Azpilicueta you would struggle to find, but their introduction is a mark of how this game has played out for the hosts.

63 minutes

18:53 , Harry Latham-Coyle

The flag’s up, but was that a chance? It’s tidy football from Chelsea to work space on the right with intricate passing and Hakim Ziyech pokes a nice pass through to Callum Hudson-Odoi, but the wing-back has gone early, and can’t find Kai Havertz, anyway. A shot might have been a better option, though we’d have been coming back regardless.

62 minutes

18:51 , Harry Latham-Coyle

12 attempts now for Aston Villa, more than in any other game so far this season for Dean Smith’s side, but the wind has gone out of their sails a touch. Jorginho has exuded relative calm in central midfield and Chelsea appear much more comfortable with their metronomic midfielder in there.

59 minutes

18:47 , Harry Latham-Coyle

And Ollie Watkins earns a corner as his shot is deflected behind.

56 minutes

18:46 , Harry Latham-Coyle

That goal has prompted a change from Dean Smith - Leon Bailey is back from an injury and takes the place of Jacob Ramsey, who had an impressive first half. A fun attacking trio for Aston Villa - Danny Ings and Ollie Watkins will be joined by Bailey. It appears Ings will play centrally with Watkins to the left and Bailey floating from the opening skirmishes since his arrival.

54 minutes

18:43 , Harry Latham-Coyle

And Ezri Konsa leaps well to head away the corner.

Chelsea have been buoyed by their second, though, and Matt Targett fouls Hakim Ziyech as the winger jinks inside the left wing back.

53 minutes

18:42 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A hammer blow for Aston Villa, that. They’ve played so well but failed to find the back of the net and Chelsea have pounced on their first opportunity since opening the scoring.

A better, and perhaps necessary, moment for Tyrone Mings as he retreats well to get in the way of Marcos Alonso’s cross ahead of a waiting Romelu Lukaku.

GOAL! CHELSEA 2-0 Aston Villa (Mateo Kovacic, 48 minutes)

18:36 , Harry Latham-Coyle

An awful error and Mateo Kovacic pounces!

Horrible for Tyrone Mings, who is put into difficulty by a teammate but then gets his backpass all wrong, hopelessly under-hitting it and watching on in anguish as Kovacic collects and beats a helpless Jed Steer. Chelsea have two.

47 minutes

18:36 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Chelsea just about manage to clear their lines from the second set-piece but this is another good start from Aston Villa. Jorginho gets on the ball for the first time and finds Kai Havertz nicely with a floated pass, but the ball bounces from the German’s foot like an anxious frog and Villa have it back.

46 minutes

18:34 , Harry Latham-Coyle

And it is as you were, with Matty Cash winning an immediate corner, from which Romelu Lukaku can only head behind. Aston Villa will deliver again.

KICK OFF! The second half has begun...

18:34 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Jorginho being readied...

18:32 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Now then - Thomas Tuchel has been so significantly troubled by Aston Villa’s midfield supremacy that he has sent for Jorginho. Saul is off at half-time on debut...

Matter of time!

18:28 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Half Time: Chelsea 1-0 Aston Villa

18:23 , Harry Latham-Coyle

That was incredibly impressive from Aston Villa, but Chelsea have the lead thanks to Romelu Lukaku’s cool finish from Mateo Kovacic’s delightful pass between the lines. Villa have created more chances, comfortably, and dominated in midfield, but some fine work from Thiago Silva and Edouard Mendy particularly means the door has not yet been breached.

HALF TIME: CHELSEA 1-0 ASTON VILLA

18:18 , Harry Latham-Coyle

45 minutes

18:17 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Into two added minutes as Aston Villa fail to create anything from the free kick.

Antonio Rudiger says hello to the fans in Row Z behind Jed Steer’s goal. How kind of him!

Dreadful shot.

44 minutes

18:15 , Harry Latham-Coyle

This time Chelsea deal with a shallower throw more effectively and Marcos Alonso boots the ball clear like a rugby player for touch.

Ollie Watkins then gains possession and spins Callum Hudson-Odoi, tumbling under an apparently fair challenge from Saul. Free kick given...yep - maybe Saul did take Watkins’ leg before he took the ball.

43 minutes

18:13 , Harry Latham-Coyle

This time it is the Chelsea fans expressing their displeasure at a decision as Kai Havertz appears to be hauled back. Stuart Attwell shakes his head - Aston Villa play on, and win another throw-in for Matty Cash to propel towards the box.

41 minutes

18:12 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Saved again! This is a simpler one for Edouard Mendy after bright play from Jacob Ramsey sees the young midfielder work a shooting opportunity on his left foot. Mendy flops down to save with a half-dive, the briefest of fumbles causing little alarm with Aston Villa’s carrion feeders not in particularly close attendance.

39 minutes

18:11 , Harry Latham-Coyle

We haven’t seen too much out of Romelu Lukaku - beyond the moment that is currently deciding the game, obviously. I’ve also been surprised with how little Chelsea have managed to threaten down the right, with Hakim Ziyech cutting inside and Callum Hudson-Odoi overlapping a potentially potent attacking force.

Here they are, and here is Ziyech cutting inside, releasing a sharp shot that stings the palms of Jed Steer. The goalkeeper can pat down into the surface in front of him with relative ease, though, but that’s about the best Chelsea have produced since the goal.

38 minutes

18:08 , Harry Latham-Coyle

John McGinn’s free kick floats harmlessly out of play. Chelsea take a breather.

36 minutes

18:07 , Harry Latham-Coyle

The away fans are jeering as Thiago Silva escapes a booking despite hauling down Danny Ings. The striker uses his read end well to keep the defender away from the ball and tumbles as Silva initiates contact. A foul, yes, but probably not a booking, despite the Aston Villa supporters’ protests.

35 minutes

18:06 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Matty Cash has had a good half hour or so. He retreats well to cut-out a floated Saul diagonal before Marcos Alonso can get on to it, and then gets his body in the way of the Spaniard to allow the hirsute Jed Steer to stride out and collect.

34 minutes

18:05 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Chelsea put their foot on the ball, desperate to find some control. Thiago Silva appears to be exerting a degree of control but Thomas Tuchel will be concerned with how his midfield have so far been over run.

32 minutes

18:04 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Double save! Edouard Mendy is comfortably the busier of the two goalkeepers and reacts well twice to deny Aston Villa efforts after Matty Cash’s launched throw had caused chaos in the Chelsea box.

29 minutes

17:59 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Saul has struggled so far, largely. He’s yet to make a successful tackle and concedes another free kick here. Chelsea just struggling to find midfield control.

27 minutes

17:57 , Harry Latham-Coyle

The chances continue to come! Douglas Luiz looks to the heavens, half in frustration and half to look for the destination of his shot as he skies a 25-yard drive that is probably still in the air. Waaaaaay over the bar.

25 minutes

17:56 , Harry Latham-Coyle

You’d say, actually, that Chelsea have been marginally the worse side so far. Aston Villa’s midfield have, aside from the goal, done outstandingly well to harry in midfield. That Ollie Watkins chance came from Saul Niguez being pickpocketed having wandered down a blind alley into the path of John McGinn.

23 minutes

17:54 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Blocked! Aston Villa continue to look dangerous, and would be level were it not for Thiago Silva. The Brazilian uses all his experience to position himself perfectly to block as Ollie Watkins, who continues to impress, jinks in the box and appears to find a clear route to goal beyond Edouard Mendy. A vital intervention from Silva.

19 minutes

17:49 , Harry Latham-Coyle

The visitors now earn back to back corners, the second of which is acrobatically punched away by Mendy, who is grappling with Douglas Luiz.

18 minutes

17:48 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Saved! A vital hand at the other end from Edouard Mendy, denying Ollie Watkins in outstanding fashion as the striker seemed set to equalise. Good response from Aston Villa.

GOAL! CHELSEA 1-0 Aston Villa (Romelu Lukaku, 15 minutes)

17:45 , Harry Latham-Coyle

What a pass from Mateo Kovacic, and Romelu Lukaku scores!

How about that from the Croatian? He skips beyond an Aston Villa tackler inside his own last third and breaks forward. He spies Lukaku making a run from the right and, like a quarterback picking his hole between the zones, threads a perfect pass on the diagonal between the bodies. Lukaku takes a touch, forces Axel Tuanzebe to commit and feigning a shot to move beyond him, beating Jed Steer with his eventual effort through the goalkeeper’s legs. Chelsea lead!

14 minutes

17:44 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Silva does precisely that as he plants himself in the way as Watkins looks to advance. An excellent intervention from the Brazilian.

13 minutes

17:44 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Danny Ings has started to the right of Ollie Watkins and is generally being followed by Antonio Rudiger, leaving his strike partner to battle the combined might of Trevoh Chalobah and Thiago Silva, who is shading, slightly, to that side.

11 minutes

17:43 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Concerns for Chelsea. Captain Marcos Alonso is down after a firm but fair sliding challenge from Matty Cash saw the pair collide, and his limping about awkwardly, helped to the touchline by a medic. He’ll wave off further treatment - the wing-back will continue, but he looks in a little discomfort.

Cash’s long-throw into the box comes to nothing despite Tyrone Mings going all freestyle footballer with a seated routine after he had tumbled, the Aston Villa defender failing to keep the ball up and alive for a teammate to strike.

9 minutes

17:41 , Harry Latham-Coyle

What’s happened there? How has that not gone in? Off the crossbar!

It’s a brilliant inswinging corner from Callum Hudson-Odoi that in the end evades everyone purposefully leaping. Ezri Konsa is unsighted and retreating to the line as the ball thumps against his knee, and the defender is fortunate that he does not turn into his own net as it thumps off the woodwork and away.

Konsa meant to get there, I think, and in the end has done well - but that was very, very close to the opener.

8 minutes

17:38 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Now that might worry Dean Smith. It’s awfully early to go in the book but Jacob Ramsey must for a cynical trip in the centre circle having been deceived as Chelsea launched an attack.

7 minutes

17:38 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Twice the ball flies across the Chelsea penalty area but Aston Villa can’t quite get a head on it. We then take a cue from Emma Raducanu and play some convincing head tennis back and forth over a net plonked somewhere near the edge of the Chelsea box, before the home side eventually clear.

6 minutes

17:37 , Harry Latham-Coyle

More good stuff from Aston Villa. Jacob Ramsey drives forward well but can’t quite force a cross before a shot is deflected behind for a corner, which John McGinn will take.

5 minutes

17:36 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Jed Steer rubs his face as the camera gives us an extended look at Aston Villa’s goalkeeper. His only appearance of the season so far was in the Carabao Cup against Barrow - a 6-0 win, so perhaps a different sort of game in store today.

He is in possession of a fine head of hair, tied back in a man bun.

3 minutes

17:35 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A first opening for Aston Villa, perhaps? A free kick on the left to be swung in...

Nearly! Plenty of height in the Villa side and Ezri Konsa times his leap nicely at the far post, but the fade of his leap and the depth of the ball means his header is always likely to shuffle away off his head and beyond the far stick. It duly does, with Edouard Mendy able to watch it all the way. Goal kick.

2 minutes

17:33 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Callum Hudson-Odoi appears to be Chelsea’s nominated set-piece taker today but he can’t work a crossing opportunity as he and Marcos Alonso combine having taken it short. Jacob Ramsey doing some good early shuttling work to cut down the angles.

Tyrone Mings is to the left of Aston Villa’s three with Axel Tuanzebe the central prong.

1 minute

17:32 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Yep - matching back fives/threes for the two sides, with Aston Villa starting with three in midfield and Danny Ings and Ollie Watkins leading the line.

Chelsea start fastest - Antoio Rudiger’s shot is deflected behind. And we’ll have a re-run, please - Marcos Alonso’s shot this time strikes a Villa foot on its way behind the goal.

KICK OFF! Chelsea vs Aston Villa has begun

Kick-off imminent...

Apparent applause as the two sets of players take a knee before kick-off, and we are ready to go.

Chelsea follow

Chelsea make their emergence soon after, with Romelu Lukaku looking to the skies. He’ll be plenty to handle for Aston Villa’s three centre-halves.

Tottenham’s defeat earlier has opened the door, with Manchester United now leading the table, but Chelsea can go top of the Premier League tonight with a win by four goals or more. Unlikely, perhaps...but you never know.

Kick-off is moving near.

Dean Smith chats with Sky Sports

17:15 , Harry Latham-Coyle

On whether his system today is a 5-3-2: “It looks like it! We felt that would be the best way to go against Chelsea. Matching up might help us. We’ve certainly got athleticism in our back three. The health of our squad is better than it has been. We strengthened the squad in the summer and it enables us to play different systems at times.

On his strike partnership: “It’s early for me to judge. What I have seen in training so far is good. We brought Danny Ings in because we think he can complement Ollie Watkins. I certainly wouldn’t want to play against the two of them.

On the missing Emiliano Martinez: “We respected that he wanted to go and play with his national team. It gives an opportunity to Jed Steer who we all believe in.”

Marcos Alonso captains

17:09 , Harry Latham-Coyle

In many ways, Marcos Alonso renaissance is an incredible story. The Spanish wing-back looked to be drifting away from Chelsea at times under Frank Lampard, a misshapen spare part who did not fit. He’s been resurgent since forcing his way back into the side under Thomas Tuchel and is ready to dive in today, armband on, in the absence of Cesar Azpilicueta.

Thomas Tuchel speaks to Sky Sports

17:06 , Harry Latham-Coyle

“It was a pretty easy one,” says Tuchel of selecting Saul for a debut. “He was with us in training and looked sharp and ready. N’Golo is out and Jorginho is overused after the international break.

On Villa’s set-up, the German says: “It looks like a 5-3-2 - we will see where we can find spaces. We have to adapt. It is not the first time that an opponent has adapted to our shape.”

The last time these two sides met was on the final day of last season, when Aston Villa emerged victorious 2-1, helped by a goal from former Chelsea loan crusader/squad member Bertrand Traore. He’s on the bench today.

Chelsea team news

16:51 , Harry Latham-Coyle

With no Reece James, and Cesar Azpilicueta only on the bench, it appears Callum Hudson-Odoi will continue to be deployed as a right wing back. He makes his 100th Chelsea appearance, and you can expect Aston Villa to get at both he and youngster Trevoh Chalobah down that right hand side if they can. Might we see Villa play with split strikers and fade one of Ollie Watkins or Danny Ings to that side?

Saul Niguez starts alongside Mateo Kovacic in midfield on debut and must contend with a potential overload - Dean Smith has three central midfielders in his side, including Jacob Ramsey. That could be a key battle.

Romelu Lukaku was sent home early from international duty by Belgium with a thigh injury which the striker described as “minor”.

Reece James is suspended for his red card at Anfield while N G’olo Kante has been having treatment after aggravating an ankle injury in that game and will miss out, though could be back for next week’s Champions League opener.

Christian Pulisic, however, has been seen on crutches with what Tuchel described as a “ten day” ankle injury.

For Villa, Emiliano Buendia and Argentina team-mate Emiliano Martinez are both missing as they quarantine.

While the pair are out of the trip to Stamford Bridge, Ollie Watkins (knee), Leon Bailey (hamstring), John McGinn and Jacob Ramsey (Covid isolation) are available.

Bertrand Traore is back in training after a hamstring injury but Trezeguet (knee) remains a long-term absentee.
