Conor Gallagher - 3

Made a big but clean tackle on Harvey Barnes in the third minute to cut out a counter attack and grew from there. Unluckily booked for bringing down Keinan Dewsbery-Hall.

He was then sent off for a brainless professional foul despite having begun the game well. It soured what was his first home start.

Crucial result

17:00 , Matt Verri

FT: Chelsea 2-1 Leicester

16:53 , Matt Verri

A brilliant result for Chelsea, especially when you consider that early red card for Gallagher.

Sterling with his first couple of Premier League goals for the club and although Barnes then halved the deficit, the Blues just about do enough to hold on.

16:51 , Matt Verri

90+2 mins: Chilwell on for Cucurella, for the final two minutes or so.

Havertz making a nuisance of himself, falling over and doing everything he can to waste time.

16:50 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Four minuted added on. Chelsea will be counting down every one of these 240 seconds.

16:48 , Matt Verri

87 mins: LEICESTER HIT THE BAR!

This is madness, they’ve had a ridiculous amount of chances. This time it’s Perez in on goal, fired over Mendy and it cannons back off the bar, into the six-yard box and a Chelsea head is there to clear.

16:45 , Matt Verri

84 mins: Another massive chance for Vardy! How many does he need?!

More than three apparently. Ball over the top, he brings it down and goes around Mendy. Tight angle, fired into the side netting.

Chelsea just about survive another scare.

16:43 , Matt Verri

82 mins: Castagne in down the right for Leicester, fires it low into the box. Silva puts it behind for a corner.

Flicked out again by Chelsea for a throw-in - hosts have defended the set-pieces really well all match.

16:39 , Matt Verri

80 mins: Vardy is in behind, looks to lift it over Mendy but it’s straight at the goalkeeper. Palmed behind.

Corner swung in, over everyone and behind for a goal kick. That was not the plan.

16:38 , Matt Verri

78 mins: A rare attack for Chelsea, Havertz briefly looks to be clean through but it’s a terrible touch. Anything a bit better and he would have got a shot away.

Leicester go up the other end, superb defending from Thiago Silva. So, so good.

Chelsea changes

16:36 , Matt Verri

16:33 , Matt Verri

74 mins: Barnes has come alive too, shifts the ball onto his right foot and fires a low effort at goal. Comfortable enough saved.

Leicester back on the attack seconds later, Iheanacho with a tame effort that dribbles wide. All Leicester!

16:32 , Matt Verri

72 mins: James tries his luck from range, it was travelling too. Important block.

Castagne in space down the right wing, digs a cross out. Headed away, straight back to him. Leicester look so much better coming forward since Iheanacho’s introduction.

16:29 , Matt Verri

69 mins: Mendy will feel like he should have saved that - was struck with plenty of pace now.

What do we have in store for the rest of this match? Leicester piling on the pressure, Iheanacho just blocked off before he can shoot from the edge of the box.

And now he does shoot... curled wide!

GOAL! Chelsea 2-1 Leicester | Harvey Barnes 66’

16:26 , Matt Verri

HOLD UP!

Leicester right back in it. Vardy sets up Barnes and we are set up for a brilliant final 25 minutes!

GOAL! Chelsea 2-0 Leicester | Raheem Sterling 63'

16:23 , Matt Verri

STERLING AT THE DOUBLE!

Massive goal for Chelsea. Lovely move, Havertz involved before James fires it across the face of goal and Sterling has a tap in.

16:21 , Matt Verri

61 mins: It’s going to be a long, long, long 30 minutes at this rate for Chelsea.

Iheanacho drives forward with the ball, passed two challenges and lays it off for Barnes. Curls an effort at goal from the edge of the box. High and wide.

16:19 , Matt Verri

59 mins: It’s all Leicester. Cross whipped in, Barnes isn’t marked in the box but his header is straight at Mendy. Came at him quickly, didn’t really have time to react.

Big ironic cheers from the Chelsea fans as Havertz then wins a free-kick as he tried to hold the ball up.

16:17 , Matt Verri

58 mins: Leicester corner swung in - Chelsea starting to be pinned back for the first time this afternoon.

Loftus-Cheek flicks it away to safety, he’s been impressive at both ends of the pitch so far.

16:15 , Matt Verri

55 mins: Iheanacho on for Leicester, as they push for an equaliser. Two up front.

Still feels like there will be chances on the break for Chelsea, a lot of space on offer when they win it back.

16:12 , Matt Verri

52 mins: Now Castagne heads over from a Leicester corner, decent chance.

Absolutely chaotic start to this half!

16:11 , Matt Verri

51 mins: Sterling hits the post!

Should have had his second. Chelsea break so quickly, Cucurella bursting forward on the left. Plays it across to Sterling, bobbles into his path and he guides it onto the post. Inches away.

16:10 , Matt Verri

50 mins: Tuchel did well to make it up into the stands in time for that goal.

Now Chelsea can sit back and just pick their moments on the counter. Sterling tries to do just that, but Tielemans slides in to stop him.

GOAL! Chelsea 1-0 Leicester | Raheem Sterling 47'

16:06 , Matt Verri

CHELSEA TAKE THE LEAD!

Perfect start to the half for the hosts. Sterling with the strike, it’s deflected but he won’t care one bit!

Back underway!

16:04 , Matt Verri

Second-half up and running at Stamford Bridge.

Barnes unfortunate

15:59 , Matt Verri

Leicester should probably be in front - that Barnes header could easily have stood.

Mendy wasn’t very strong as he came off his line, just looked to have been beaten to the ball by Barnes.

Chelsea certainly got away with one there.

More problems for Chelsea...

15:53 , Matt Verri

HT: Chelsea 0-0 Leicester

15:50 , Matt Verri

Huge chance with the final kick of the half, as Castagne is denied by Mendy who produces a sensational save!

Chelsea down to ten but it hasn’t changed the feel of the match too much. Leicester happy to sit back at times, doing their best work on the counter.

Entertaining watch!

(Action Images via Reuters)

15:47 , Matt Verri

45+1 mins: Three minutes added on at the end of the half.

Leicester break with Barnes, Vardy makes the run and he gets the pass. Tries to slide in Dewsbury-Hall, pass is cut out.

15:45 , Matt Verri

44 mins: HUGE MOMENT!

Oh Vardy. Ball played over the top, striker is clean through on goal but he’s dragged it badly wide. Massive chance, flag stayed down.

15:44 , Matt Verri

43 mins: Chelsea finishing the half pretty well, considering they’re down to ten. Leicester not really making the advantage count.

Loftus-Cheek opts not to shoot from range, played out to the wing instead. Clipped into the box, falls for James and he fires at goal from a tight angle - off the post! Brilliant effort.

15:42 , Matt Verri

40 mins: Another Leicester corner. Can they actually do something with this one?

Bit better, comes out to Justin 30 yards out and he hammers an effort at goal. Blocked by the mass of bodies in the box.

Chelsea break, Sterling beats Praet and that’s a free-kick. Yellow card too.

Chelsea not sitting back

15:39 , Matt Verri

15:38 , Matt Verri

37 mins: Chelsea determined to make this hard for themselves.

Playing out from the back, Justin charges in to close Silva down and the centre-back very nearly loses it on the edge of his own box.

The Blues just about survive.

GOOO... NO!

15:36 , Matt Verri

35 mins: Well then, Leicester have the ball in the back of the net but the whistle has gone.

Mendy comes off his line from a corner to try and punch the ball, goes up with Barnes he wins it and heads into the back of the empty net.

But the referee has decides it’s a foul from Barnes - pretty soft.

15:34 , Matt Verri

33 mins: Leicester corner, they’re full of confidence now with the extra man. Dewsbury-Hall over to take.

And once again it’s absolutely hopless. Into the near post, barely reaches the first man.

15:32 , Matt Verri

31 mins: Dewsbury-Hall with a very risky challenge!

He slides in high and late on Cucurella, Chelsea players waste no time in demanding a red card.

Just a yellow, despite Cucurella’s best efforts.

RED CARD!

15:29 , Matt Verri

Conor Gallagher is off! Chelsea down to ten for the second match in a row.

He was the last man back as Leicester broken from a corner, he’s made an incredibly cynical foul on Barnes and that’s as clear a second yellow as you’ll ever see.

15:28 , Matt Verri

27 mins: After making their views on Fofana very clear, the Leicester fans are now serenading Chilwell.

“Ben Chilwell, he sits on the bench.”

Nizaar Kinsella at Stamford Bridge

15:25 , Matt Verri

Thomas Tuchel has been discussing an evolution of Chelsea’s tactics ahead of kick-off and sees his side playing a hybrid formation which is a slight departure from his 3-4-3.

They are attacking with a back four, moving Reece James to right back and Loftus-Cheek into midfield to find more goals.

It’s a good way of protecting James, who spent a long time injured last season due to the demands of the wing-back position, but retains his attacking threat.

Conor Gallagher also gets more freedom to go forward having been great in the final third for Crystal Palace last season.

15:24 , Matt Verri

24 mins: Chelsea giving away plenty of free-kicks as they continue to press. Havertz late on Justin, sends the defender toppling over. Just a free-kick this time.

Plenty of intensity but not aside from that Loftus-Cheek chance, not much in the way of clear opportunities.

15:23 , Matt Verri

22 mins: Gallagher into the book, as he brings down Dewsbury-Hall.

Not sure he needed to make the challenge either, Leicester midfielder was past him but only on the halfway line.

15:20 , Matt Verri

19 mins: Havertz completely free down the middle for Chelsea, Sterling swivels and looks to play him clean through.

Too much on the pass though and Evans can get across to slide in. Even with a heavy pass the German was still nearly in. Leicester captain appears to have hurt himself making that challenge.

15:17 , Matt Verri

16 mins: Loftus-Cheek getting a crazy amount of space, Leicester not picking him up at all. Chelsea corner.

Cucurella takes, headed out to Gallagher and he just about does enough to stop a Foxes counter.

NO PENALTY!

15:14 , Matt Verri

It’s been overturned though - offside in the build-up!

Havertz is offside by the length of his big toe, which is how the move started. Leicester survive, very fortunate to do so.

PENALTY CHELSEA!

15:13 , Matt Verri

And that is not so good from Tielemans!

Loftus-Cheek in the box, shifts it onto his right foot and it’s really clumsy from Tielemans. Not sure he can have any complaints there.

15:12 , Matt Verri

11 mins: Tielemans pressured facing his own goal, does well to hold the ball up and shows nice footwork to win a cheap free-kick.

Chelsea not giving Leicester a second. Tuchel looking down from high up in his stands will be happy with what he’s seeing.

15:10 , Matt Verri

9 mins: Frantic start to this match. Leicester come forward now, Silva lunges in to win it back.

Tielemans then goes flying in on Jorginho, and another huge challenge in midfield. It’s chaotic at Stamford Bridge!

Safe to say both sides are very much up for this.

15:08 , Matt Verri

7 mins: MASSIVE CHANCE!

Chelsea have to take the lead. Sterling plays a lovely ball across the face of goal, Loftus-Cheek completely free at the back post but he fires straight at Ward.

Six yards out, has to finish that.

15:07 , Matt Verri

6 mins: Gallagher gets back well again as Justin looks to drive into the box, concedes the corner. Up comes Evans for the Foxes.

Tielemans takes, it’s absolutely woeful. Punted away by Havertz at the near post.

Flexible role for James

15:05 , Matt Verri

15:03 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Chelsea straight on the front foot from kick-off, dominating possession. Leicester with very little interest in pressing.

James clips a cross into the box, cut out and Leicester can break for the first time with Barnes. That is until Gallagher sprints back, slides in and takes the ball.

KICK-OFF!

15:00 , Matt Verri

We’re underway at Stamford Bridge!

Nizaar Kinsella at Stamford Bridge

14:57 , Matt Verri

Thomas Tuchel has kept faith in a lot of players who underperformed against Leeds in his line up against Leicester City.

There has been no goals between the front three in the first three matches of the season - with only Raheem Sterling registering an assist and Mason Mount and Kai Havertz having no goal involvements.

Both central midfielders were poor against Leeds but continue again today. Ruben Loftus-Cheek plays at wing-back, a position where he performed well versus Tottenham but not against Leeds.

Meanwhile, the likes of Ben Chilwell, Christian Pulisic, Hakim Ziyech and Cesar Azpilicueta might feel hard done by not coming in.

Spirits high in the Leicester camp

Tuchel on touchline ban

14:54 , Matt Verri

“We will have the line of communication that we normally have, because I’m with one of my assistant coaches up in the stands.

“I can be in the dressing room before and between both halves, so it should not be the biggest problem.”

Kick-off in ten minutes!

14:51 , Matt Verri

Big 90 minutes coming up

14:47 , Matt Verri

Victory for Chelsea and they could be up into the top six, while Leicester could move from 19th up towards the top half with three points. All very congested, of course.

So early in the season but feels like an important afternoon for both sides.

Fofana confirms Chelsea move

14:41 , Matt Verri

Think we can call that a done deal!

Fofana effectively confirmed that he is off to Chelsea - the Blues about to finally get their man.

Warm-ups underway!

14:32 , Matt Verri

Another chance for Gallagher

14:28 , Matt Verri

Not the greatest of matches for Conor Gallagher last time out, as he made his full debut for Chelsea against Leeds.

Far from alone in struggling at Elland Road though - he gets another opportunity alongside Jorginho in midfield.

Elsewhere in the Premier League...

In the early kick-off, Manchester United have just about got the better of Southampton.

Bruno Fernandes with a lovely finish has given them a 1-0 win, making it back-to-back victories after their success against Liverpool.

Erik ten Hag’s side up to sixth in the table. For now.

No Maddison for Leicester

14:12 , Matt Verri

So Leicester are without James Maddison, who misses out with injury.

Onus on the likes of Barnes, Vardy and Tielemans to step up for the Foxes in his absence this afternoon.

Problems in both camps

13:45 , Matt Verri

Chelsea with one win this season, a narrow 1-0 victory over Everton on the opening weekend. That only came thanks to a penalty.

Leicester yet to win, struggling both on and off the pitch - bordering on a crisis and it’s only August.

Safe to say both sides could really do with three points this afternoon!

Lampard warns Chelsea over Gordon

13:38 , Matt Verri

Frank Lampard has warned that Chelsea are “very close” to running out of time to secure a deal for Everton winger Anthony Gordon.

Along with Wesley Fofana and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the England Under-21 international is a key target for Thomas Tuchel before next week’s transfer deadline as protracted talks continue.

Chelsea are understood to have seen two bids for Gordon worth up to £45million rejected by Everton, who do not want to sell but may have to due to their financial situation.

Standard Sport understands that a £60m offer could be enough to secure a deal, but the Toffees want either Conor Gallagher or Armando Broja thrown in on loan.

Rodgers not losing sleep over situation

13:29 , Matt Verri

Three matches. Two defeats. One draw.

Brendan Rodgers insists he is not feeling the pressure despite Leicester’s terrible start to the season.

“I’m feeling the want to get the result. I’m not feeling the pressure, it’s a pressurised job,” Rodgers said.

He added: “I look back over my time here, over three-and-a-half years, and we’ve spent on net about £25m per season and that’s got us to where we’ve got to in terms of challenging at the top end of the table, winning a couple of trophies and getting to a European semi-final.

“What I hope as a manager is to continue with that ambition. If I’m unable to do that and the club decide it needs to go in a different direction, that’s the way it is. That’s football and that’s management. I don’t lose sleep over it.”

No Tuchel on the touchline

13:20 , Matt Verri

Thomas Tuchel will be absent from the touchline for this afternoon’s clash.

The Blues boss was hit with a one-match suspension and fined £35,000 by the Football Association (FA) last week after admitting a charge of improper conduct following his heated touchline clashes with Tottenham counterpart Antonio Conte during a furious 2-2 London derby draw at Stamford Bridge.

The touchline ban was suspended pending an appeal, which Tuchel admitted at his pre-Leicester press conference on Friday he did not expect to be successful.

Such an appeal has indeed been firmly rejected by the FA, meaning the German will be absent from the touchline when Leicester visit west London.

Latest on Fofana

13:06 , Matt Verri

Chelsea have verbally agreed a £70million fee for Leicester centre-back Wesley Fofana plus add-ons that will likely make it a world-record sum for a defender.

The 21-year-old has already agreed on personal terms until 2027 with the option for an extra year.

The fee could exceed the one paid by Manchester United to sign Harry Maguire in 2019 and is the fourth in a series of bids to sign the Foxes defender, who had requested a move and was training with the Under-21s. Leicester have been lining up a replacement for the last few days to allow the deal to go through.

Prediction

12:58 , Matt Verri

Chelsea are struggling but can evidently get up for a game, whereas Leicester look like they are just coasting and have massive problems so early in the season.

A expect the Blues to come out fighting after last week’s reality check and should have too much for Brendan Rodgers & Co.

Chelsea to win 2-0.

Leicester team news

12:49 , Matt Verri

Wesley Fofana will once again miss out given Chelsea’s interest in his transfer, as confirmed by Brendan Rodgers.

Elsewhere for Leicester, Harvey Barnes could return after a knee injury while James Maddison is a slight doubt after feeling a “twinge” in training.

Chelsea team news

12:42 , Matt Verri

Chelsea will be missing N’Golo Kante, who Thomas Tuchel has stated will be out for around four weeks.

Mateo Kovacic is set to return to the squad with a potential cameo role confirmed for the Croatian midfielder.

Kalidou Koulibaly is banned after his red card against Leeds, which should see Ben Chilwell start as Marc Cucurella steps into the back three.

Kai Havertz has been struggling of late, which could see Armando Broja given a chance. Conor Gallagher may lose his place in midfield.

Predicted Chelsea XI: Mendy; Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva, Cucurella; James, Loftus-Cheek, Jorginho, Chilwell; Mount, Havertz, Sterling.
