Chelsea make ‘first positive contacts’ with Nagelsmann as two in frame to replace Potter
Chelsea have reportedly made ‘first positive contacts’ with Julian Nagelsmann over him becoming manager at Stamford Bridge at the end of the season.
Graham Potter has struggled in his first season in charge and although Todd Boehly has consistently come out in ‘full support’ of the former Brighton man – who has also started to turn things around of late – the Blues owners are planning for a potential future without him.
And Julian Nagelsmann’s surprising exit from Bayern Munich has caught Chelsea’s eye.
Despite being one point off the top in the league and leading a team with a 100 per cent record in the Champions League, Nagelsmann was sacked by the Bundesliga giants and replaced by former Blues boss Thomas Tuchel.
Reports suggest Nagelsmann is going to take some time to consider his next steps, which is bad news for Tottenham, but plays into Chelsea’s hands.
Potter looks set to be given until the end of the season at Stamford Bridge, but at that point could be shown the door if he’s not given the owners enough cause for optimism.
And journalist Rudy Galletti reports that Chelsea are laying the groundwork for the future, and have made contact with Nagelsmann.
He claims that the former RB Leipzig boss is one of the ‘main options’ to replace Potter along with Luis Enrique, who recently left his post as manager of the Spanish national team.
Galletti tweeted: ‘First positive contacts between #Nagelsmann and some #Chelsea representatives. To date, the former #BayernMunich coach is one of the #CFC’s main options for the next season – together with Luis Enrique – in the event of Graham #Potter being sacked. #Transfers’
Chelsea currently sit tenth in the Premier League and were dumped out at the early stages of both domestic cup competitions.
The Champions League offers Potter and Chelsea the only chance of silverware this season, and their path to final could not be tougher with Real Madrid in the quarter-finals before the winner of Manchester City and Bayern Munich in the semis.
