Barcelona have reportedly begun pursuing Celta Vigo star Javi Galan, which is a boost for Chelsea and their hopes of retaining Marcos Alonso.
Spain international Alonso has made clear his desire to leave west London this summer. He wants to go back to Spain and believes now is a good time for a transfer due to his Chelsea contract expiring next year.
However, Thomas Tuchel’s side don’t want to let him go. They have already lost Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen on free transfers. Plus, Barcelona want to sign Cesar Azpilicueta and Alonso in a double deal.
Allowing the two full-backs to leave would cause Tuchel serious problems heading into the new campaign.
The Blues are having trouble replacing Rudiger and Christensen. They have brought in Kalidou Koulibaly, but fellow target Jules Kounde is now closing on a Barca move.
Alonso would like the chance to negotiate with Xavi’s team and potentially play at the Camp Nou. However, Chelsea officials have seemingly had enough of the Blaugrana and are refusing to think about a sale.
Barca appear to have got the message, which will be welcome news to those at Stamford Bridge. According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, the La Liga giants have begun targeting Celta Vigo’s Galan.
They are preparing to go all out for the 27-year-old as a move for Alonso looks increasingly unlikely.
Barca moving on from Marcos Alonso
Barca think Galan would be a solid replacement for Jordi Alba on the left side of defence. Alba has been a loyal servant to the club but is now 33 years old, meaning a successor will soon need to be captured.
Celta Vigo are aware of the interest and have told Barca to pay around £15m for Galan. As everyone knows, Barca have huge debt right now – but this isn’t stopping them from signing players. And Galan could follow the likes of Franck Kessie and Robert Lewandowski there.
Mundo Deportivo go on to reveal Galan’s thoughts about the potential move. They claim he would like the chance to take the next step in his career, as he is in his prime.
However, the Spaniard doesn’t want to ruin his relationship with Celta Vigo and its supporters. Due to this, he will not hand in a transfer request.
Xavi and Joan Laporta setting their sights on Galan is good news for Chelsea. It means Alonso is less likely to take part in the exodus of players who could swap them for Barca.
The two clubs have been intertwined this summer. Christensen left for Catalonia after the expiry of his Chelsea contract, and then there was the Raphinha saga.
Chelsea thought they had won the race for his services after agreeing a deal with Leeds. But Raphinha only wanted to sign for Barca and this eventually became a reality.
More recently the two teams have been fighting over Kounde. The Blues once again thought they were in a strong position to complete a deal, but now Kounde is close to bolstering Barca’s centre-back options.
Meanwhile, Timo Werner could return to Germany as a journalist claims one club has made an approach to sign him.
