Chelsea are reportedly in the frame to sign Robert Lewandowski, should his Barcelona transfer fail to reach completion.

Lewandowski wants to leave Bayern Munich this summer to take part in a new challenge and potentially win trophies elsewhere. But Bayern are determined to keep him in Bavaria for the final 12 months of his contract and are demanding big money.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the striker has agreed personal terms with Barca and is ‘convinced’ they will be his next club.

And Blaugrana president Joan Laporta recently confirmed a bid has been submitted.

“We made an offer to FC Bayern to sign Lewandowski and we are waiting for their response, I hope their response is positive,” the chief said.

“I want to thank Lewandowski here in public for what he is doing to join us.”

One major problem for Barca is the financial aspect of the deal. They want to pay his potential £30million fee in instalments due to their outstanding debt.

But Bayern want this sum to be paid in full right away, putting Lewandowski’s move under threat.

Chelsea among Robert Lewandowski suitors

According to German journalist Christian Falk, Lewandowski has two options if his Barca switch falls through.

One of them is Chelsea. Falk claims the Poland international would prefer a transfer to Chelsea or Barca, rather than remain at Bayern.

French giants Paris Saint-Germain are also preparing to get in the mix, should Lewandowski fail to join Barca.

But the fact the attacker wants Chelsea or Barca, rather than PSG, is a major boost for Thomas Tuchel’s side.

The Blues should be targeting an experienced striker such as Lewandowski, too. Record signing Romelu Lukaku was recently loaned out to Inter Milan for the forthcoming season.

Tuchel can utilise Kai Havertz, Timo Werner and Armando Broja up front. But there are slight issues with all three of these options.

Havertz likes to play just behind the striker, rather than as the actual number nine. Werner has scored just 10 Premier League goals in 56 games since joining Chelsea, which is way below what the club requires.

And Broja could leave Stamford Bridge this summer, either on loan or permanently. Therefore, signing a proven striker such as Lewandowski would be a great move from Chelsea.

Meanwhile, Chelsea have reportedly come to an agreement with Nathan Ake, as his transfer from Manchester City edges closer.
