Former Chelsea midfielder Emmanuel Petit believes the next manager should target Real Madrid star Rodrygo. The Blues enjoyed an end of season surge into Europe, spearheaded by Cole Palmer, as Mauricio Pochettino ended his debut campaign on a high.

The Argentine left Stamford Bridge by mutual consent after the Premier League campaign. Leicester City boss Enzo Maresca is set to become the next Blues manager as chiefs in West London continue to work on a deal to bring the promotion-winning manager to the capital.

Palmer netted 22 goals in 33 top-flight appearances to help Chelsea to a sixth-placed finish. Qualification for Europe marked a strong end to a disappointing season as Pochettino came under immense pressure for their performances following the free-spending of the Todd Boehly-led ownership.

Nicolas Jackson was among the new arrivals to face scrutiny, after arriving for in excess of £30.1million, but still contributed 15 goals in the top-flight this season. The Villarreal forward was slammed for his profligacy throughout the season, issuing an explicit response in December.

Petit, who made 76 appearances for the Blues before calling time on his professional playing career, believes the Brazilian - who is also being targeted by Liverpool - could aid the Senegal international in his second season in England. Speaking to BoyleSports, who offer the latest Champions League betting, the Frenchman said: "I think Chelsea should sign Rodrygo from Real Madrid to help Nicolas Jackson next season.

"With Mbappe arriving next season, one of Real’s big stars are going to be out of the XI, so I think this one makes sense for both parties. Real Madrid could get a big fee and he will also be great for Jackson, although he is still young."

Rodrygo has frequently faced speculation over his future at the Spanish giants. The 23-year-old has been a focal point in Real Madrid's fierce front three of Vinicius Jr, Karim Benzema and the former Santos attacker.

Real Madrid have been in a long-running battle with Paris Saint-Germain to lure Kylian Mbappe to the capital but have failed in their previous attempts. The France international is out of contract this summer and there is a suggestion that he will be moving to the Champions League finalists.

A move for Mbappe would provide a severe dent to Madrid financially but also raise question marks over Rodrygo's place in the squad. As a result, reports have suggested that the Brazilian could move - including Mundo Deportivo who reported this week that Liverpool are front of the queue to sign the three-time La Liga winner.
