Chelsea face a key decision over the future of young goalkeeper Lucas Bergstrom.

The 22-year-old arrived at Stamford Bridge in 2018 from Finnish side TPS. He featured for the under-18s and under-23s and was named in the Blues matchday squad multiple times by former manager Mauricio Pochettino.

However, he eventually left on loan to join Peterborough United, where he made 28 first-team appearances for the club. In February, he joined Swedish side IF Brommapojkarna on loan to gain further valuable experience.

Chelsea confirmed that Bergstrom signed a new contract with the club before completing the switch. His new deal keeps him committed to the Stamford Bridge club until the summer of 2025, six months after his loan deal with IF Brommapojkarna is due to expire.

However, he is unlikely to make a senior debut for the Blues. Having entered the final year of his current deal, Bergstrom will be free to engage in conversations with clubs from abroad in January and potentially sign a pre-contract.

With that said, Chelsea will have to make a decision over his future before the turn of the year. Speaking about his future earlier this summer, Bergstrom has suggested being unsure over his future at Stamford Bridge.

"Last season was a very interesting season for me. I had seven months in the first team, being on the bench many times in the Premier League and the cups," he said.

"It felt very good being part of the team and trying to achieve things, before going on loan in March. Looking to this season, I’m not someone who sets targets for myself.

"For me, I’m just going to focus on today now, and tomorrow I will focus on tomorrow, and I will see where it brings me. Obviously, I want this team to succeed and hopefully we can, but for me it’s just about short-term goals and trying to be my best every day, and letting that path take you where it takes you."

The club added a ninth goalkeeper to their ranks this summer after completing a deal for Genk's Mike Penders. He is expected to join the club next summer. There have been concerns about how the west London team are stockpiling players between the sticks.

Chelsea have signed Filip Jorgensen, Robert Sanchez, Djorde Petrovic, Marcus Bettinelli, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Gabriel Slonina, Lucas Bergstrom and Eddie Beach in their books. Bergstrom is the only player whose contract will run out next summer.
