Chelsea have been handed huge updates on Roberto De Zerbi and Kieran McKenna in their hunt to appoint a new manager. The Blues parted ways with Mauricio Pochettino earlier this month after just one season despite the former Tottenham boss guiding them to a sixth-placed finish.

With that, Europa League football looked to have been confirmed, however Manchester United's FA Cup triumph has seen Chelsea demoted down to the Europa Conference League. As a result of that, the new manager will take charge of his first European games towards the end of August with the Blues needing to navigate a two-legged play-off to even reach the group stages.

Exactly who will be appointed is currently unknown but Kieran McKenna, Enzo Maresca, Thomas Frank and Roberto De Zerbi have all been linked. Just days before Pochettino's exit was announced, Brighton parted ways with De Zerbi and thus they are looking for a new manager with similar targets to Chelsea in their thoughts.

McKenna has already been interviewed for the role on the south coast but he is said to be waiting for the Manchester United job with Erik ten Hag's future uncertain. On Saturday though, Ten Hag did wonders to keep his position after guiding United to an FA Cup victory over rivals Manchester City.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe now has a huge decision to make with it certainly plausible Chelsea can appoint McKenna if United delay their manager decision. De Zerbi meanwhile is a name that has gathered pace in recent days with some clarity now emerging on the compensation any interested club would need to pay Brighton.

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, via his daily briefing, revealed: "The original release clause was about €15million (£12.8m), but then the new clause in place as part of his agreement to leave Brighton is there and is less than €10million (£8.6m).

"Let’s see what happens with the managers domino this summer, but for sure De Zerbi is one of the big names available.

"We know Chelsea are looking for a new manager, with candidates like Kieran McKenna and Enzo Maresca, and also Thomas Frank, while we also need to keep an eye on the situation at Manchester United because if they change manager we need to see what kind of coach they want.

"Thomas Tuchel is super keen on the job but who is the man they really want? It could be someone experienced like Tuchel or maybe a young manager, they still need to decide as they review the situation and decide on Ten Hag.

"Still, De Zerbi has a cheap clause and so he could be one to watch in the next days and weeks. For sure, busy days and hours are coming."
