Leicester City have reportedly put an €80m price tag on Wesley Fofana with Chelsea and Manchester United ‘closely interested’.

The French centre-half was linked with a move last summer but stayed put after he broke his leg in a pre-season friendly.

He then penned a new long-term contract in March. His current deal will keep him contracted with the Premier League club until 2027.

Fofana joined from Saint-Etienne for over £30m and has impressed since his move to England.

His absence this term was notable with the Foxes struggling defensively before he returned to the team for a Europa Conference League tie against Stade Rennes in March.

Chelsea have been linked with the 21-year-old since last summer and are in the market for a new central defender following the departures of Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger.

Last month, the Daily Mail reported that head coach Thomas Tuchel will have £200m to spend this summer, with the ‘vast chunk’ going on defenders, following Todd Boehly’s takeover.

Sevilla’s Jules Kounde, Villarreal’s Pau Torres, RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol and Villarreal’s Pau Torres are all said to be on Tuchel’s wishlist alongside Fofana.

And now French publication RMC Sport (via Leicester Mercury) have claimed that Chelsea are ‘closely interested’ in the Leicester star, as are Manchester United.

They would be expected to pay €80m (£68.3m) in order to strike a deal, with the Foxes in a strong position to avoid selling for a cut-price.

United are keen on bolstering their defence this summer and have also been linked with Torres, as well as Ajax youngster Jurrien Timber, who worked with the Red Devils’ newly appointed manager, Erik ten Hag, for the Dutch champions.

Former United and current Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal has advised Timber against making a move to Old Trafford, however.

“I think a player of his quality can play in the Premier League. That is not a problem,” Van Gaal said. “If he has to make this big step now, that’s the question.

“It is not so wise I think [to move to United]. He has to play.”
