Chelsea have moved closer to the signing of Leicester City’s Wesley Fofana by reportedly agreeing personal terms with him.

The Blues have already brought in Kalidou Koulibaly this summer but need another new defender after losing both Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen on free transfers. Chelsea had set their sights on former player Nathan Ake, but Manchester City didn’t want to sell the 27-year-old Dutchman.

Fofana has since come into frame for Thomas Tuchel and Chelsea. Reports state they have already had two bids rejected for him, which came in at £62million and then £70m.

French source Media Foot claim a new record-breaking offer is on the horizon. That’s because Chelsea are apparently planning to bid a whopping £84.5m (€100m) for the Leicester man.

This would make Fofana the most expensive defender in history, surpassing the £80m Manchester United paid the Foxes for Harry Maguire in 2019.

This bid is yet to come to fruition. But Chelsea have still taken another massive stride in their attempt to land Fofana.

As per the Daily Mail, the Blues have sorted out personal terms with him. They will pay Fofana around £200,000 a week on a long-term deal, should an agreement be reached with Leicester.

This is a huge boost for Chelsea in their hunt for Fofana. It means his signing can go through quickly if they meet Leicester’s asking price.

Wesley Fofana keen to make Chelsea switch

The Frenchman likes playing at Leicester but is also attracted by the proposition of joining a bigger club. He currently earns £51k per week at the King Power, according to Salary Sport.

It’s no surprise he has agreed personal terms with Chelsea as they are happy to almost quadruple his wage.

Chelsea will now focus all of their attention on striking a deal with Brendan Rodgers’ side. The Daily Mail state they want at least £80m, s0 the world-record offer Media Foot have proposed will be enough.

Rodgers is asked about the centre-back’s future at pretty much every press conference currently. Prior to the clash against Arsenal, he said: “The point to reiterate is that we are not looking to sell Wesley. That is they key point. He’s not a player we are actively looking to sell but naturally if there is interest from other clubs that is looked at by the club.

“He is a top young defender, there are not too many about at his age. He is someone we would love to keep here but we will have to see what develops.”

As Rodgers’ comments suggest, Leicester will accept a bid if it matches their valuation of Fofana. And while him leaving would be a blow, getting £80m in return will help them bring in two good defenders as reinforcements.

Meanwhile, Sunday’s Transfer Gossip has the latest on Chelsea’s push to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Barcelona.
