Chelsea have named Borussia Dortmund winger Karim Adeyemi as their top forward transfer target as Enzo Maresca tries to bolster that area of the pitch this summer.

The Blues are looking to strengthen out their attacking department to support Nicolas Jackson and the wide players, with Adeyemi the latest player to be linked with a move to Stamford Bridge. The 22-year-old scored five goals and grabbed two assists in 35 appearances last season.

He scored a superb solo goal against Chelsea during a Champions League last 16 first leg tie in February 2023, as he dribbled through and took the ball around Kepa Arrizabalaga before slotting into an empty net. A dynamic and versatile attacker, Adeyemi has been predominately used as a left winger since moving to Dortmund, having played mainly as a centre forward at RB Leipzig, who he left in May 2022.

Now, according to journalist Rudy Galetti, Chelsea are 'increasing their pressure' on Adeyemi. Talks are ongoing with the representatives of the Dortmund wide man, with Adeyemi at the top of Chelsea's summer shopping list as their main forward target. Bild claimed last month that he was valued at €30million (£25.4m).

After signing for Leipzig in 2018, Adeyemi almost immediately left the club to join 2 Liga - the second tier of German football - side FC Liefering on loan. He impressed there and returned to Leipzig during the following season, where he sparkled in the UEFA Youth League before earning a spot in the senior set-up.

Adeyemi cemented himself as a first-team regular in 2020/21, scoring nine goals and adding 11 assists in 39 appearances in a breakthrough season. He followed that up with another impressive campaign, chipping in with 23 goals and nine assists in 44 appearances - his most prolific to date - which earned him a move to Dortmund.

Since his switch to Signal Iduna Park in May 2022, Adeyemi has not been as ruthless in front of goal, but a slight change of position from up front to out on the left wing has slowed his productivity. During his two years at Dortmund, Adeyemi has scored 14 goals in 66 appearances.

As for Chelsea, Maresca conducted his first interview as their new head coach after replacing Mauricio Pochettino in the hot seat last month. When asked how much he is looking forward to working with the Blues squad, he told their club website: "I'm very excited.

"One of the reasons I’m here is because I’m convinced the squad is very good and full of talent. The most important thing now is we’re able to create the right culture that drives us for the season.

"I always say the same: if you are able to improve players then you are able to improve the team. So it’s our target to try to improve all of them day by day."
