A bidding war for an explosive attacker in the form of his life could loom after two reports claimed Chelsea and Newcastle are both mulling January moves.

The Blues and Magpies will both be strong contenders for Champions League qualification at season’s end. Newcastle currently sit fourth and without the distraction of European football each midweek, are thriving under Eddie Howe.

Chelsea suffered their first defeat since Graham Potter took charge at the weekend. Brighton did the deed, with the Seagulls appearing extra motivated in their quest to put one over their former manager.

Brighton raced into a two-goal lead and were ahead inside five minutes at the AMEX.

Leandro Trossard found the net first, with his opener the Belgian’s seventh goal of the season.

The 27-year-old also has two assists to his name, while his seven strikes are just one off his entire tally for last season over 35 matches (eight).

The versatile attacker is in the form of his life and can do little wrong at present.

He bagged a memorable hat-trick at Anfield earlier in the season, becoming only the third opposing player to do so in the Premier League era. The others were Coventry City’s Peter Ndlovu in 1995 and Arsenal’s Andrey Arshavin in 2009.

Trossard is arguably Brighton’s shining light in attack, though his contract situation suggests he may be on the move sooner rather than later.

While Brighton do have the option for an extra year, Trossard’s deal is due to expire next summer.

Chelsea and Newcastle on collision course for Trossard?

The Daily Express report that should Brighton fail in their attempts to tie him down to a long-term deal, they may cash in in January.

Chelsea and Newcastle are known admirers, and Trossard previously stated he’d find it impossible to say no if Chelsea came calling.

The Express claim Chelsea may ‘speed up’ their pursuit of Trossard and act straight after the World Cup.

However, the Northern Echo bring details of Newcastle’s interest, claiming they too are eyeing a January raid.

Howe reportedly wants just a small handful of new signings as opposed to another mass influx. Clearly, he’s happy with how his team are performing at present and won’t make a signing just because the money is there.

Trossard would add another dimension to an already thriving Magpies attack. As such, the Northern Echo report Newcastle are ‘preparing to lodge an initial inquiry before the end of the year.’

Trossard is reportedly valued around the £30m mark. The fact Brighton have the option of an extra year in his deal means his valuation is somewhat protected and a cut-price swoop isn’t viable.

Newcastle may therefore make the first move with a £30m offer. If Chelsea’s interest is genuine and Potter demands a reunion, a bidding war could commence.
