Chelsea pair Thiago Silva and N’Golo Kante have become the latest Blues players to test positive for Covid, ahead of tonight’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Tottenham.

The Blues have been hit hard by positive cases in their squad through the festive period and were left furious when the Premier League rejected their request to postpone last month’s meeting with Wolves.

The latest positive tests rob Tuchel of two of his most important players for the meeting with Spurs at Stamford Bridge.

“It’s huge for us because they are two huge players,” the German said. “We had the last information today in the morning, so it is quite challenging, but we will push. The guys who are here have our trust and our belief.

“We will push things to the maximum. The situation hasn’t changed since some weeks ago, it’s not the moment to repeat it, from here we are looking for solutions. I have trust in the guys who play and hopefully we put in a strong performance.”

Silva’s positive test comes just days after the Brazilian signed a contract extension to keep him at the club next season.

The duo’s absence were part of six changes to Tuchel’s lineup from the side that started the thrilling 2-2 draw against Liverpool on Sunday, with Romelu Lukaku brought straight back into the lineup after being dropped for that game.
