Danny Drinkwater's Chelsea struggles continued on Monday night after the midfield outcast was sent off while playing for the club’s Under-23s team.

The ex-Leicester man joined Chelsea for £35million in 2017 on a reported wage of around £100,000 a week, but has not made a Premier League appearance for the Blues since March 2018.

Having failed to secure a move away from Stamford Bridge before this season following two unsuccessful loan spells with Burnley and Aston Villa in 2019/20, Drinkwater was left out of Frank Lampard's top-flight squad list and has instead been playing with the development team to get some minutes under his belt.

Facing London rivals Tottenham on Monday night, the 30-year-old played his part as Chelsea fought back from 2-0 down to win 3-2, before setting a rather poor example for the youngsters around him.

Drinkwater was brought down by Spurs' Alfie Devine, the 16-year-old summer signing from Wigan, who was also shown a red for his nasty challenge, before kicking out at the teenager in retaliation.

The reaction sparked a mass brawl on the pitch at Kingsmeadow which had to be broken up by Petr Cech, who made a shock return to action in Monday’s clash.
